On the other hand, take Murali for example. He was on the verge of reaching 800 wkts, however he announced that he would retire after a particular series irrespective of whether he reaches 800 or not. An Indian cricketer probably would not have done that and got to the landmark first. We don't want to leave such legacy for the next generation of cricketers

Just saying SRT's stature as a test cricketer is way above Dhoni's. He was the best batsman of his generation and arguably the greatest of all time. Dhoni has been an average or just above that test cricketer. I have rarely seen experts praising him for his test batting or captaincy. The respect he has is due to ODI heroics.

Well SRTs legacy was diminished some what due to his late retirement.So yes his retirement needs to be brought into the picture. Sure SRT is a better test cricketer but generally people remember the person who stands out as an icon for their generation and IMO that six on a humid night in Mumbai will be remembered for a long time.
