In the heat of the moment, not many think straight its not as if he had all the time in the world and then still decided to copy. Axing somebody for this is a bit cold hearted. By all means suspend and warn the person in question to set standards. Maybe cricinfo need to send their ball by ball commentators to the ground? I can easily see this mistake being repeated. I don't know how much you know about the field of writing but I can assure you that plagiarism is taken pretty seriously. It is informed beforehand and the person knows the consequences. There are certain places were plagiarism will turn your entire career - not just one job - history.

Exactly what I was thinking. He could have simply picked up the first line, and kept a short description.. What's the need to write 6 lines for every ball?

He wasn't seen around for almost an year or so.. But copying commentary is just not recommended. In fact, when you have companies like Sony who don't want websites to be up to date with the live scores, copying from your biggest rival is a sin.

I can understand if its in a book or something like that. not saying he should not be punished in some form.

This is writing - the writer is reporting on a live event; not different from writing. Originality in written works (books, not books etc. is irrelevant) is a serious business. Even if you plagiarize a blog, it is plagiarism. You plagiarize a post from ICF, it is still plagiarism. The penalty is pre-decided in most cases by the organization whom you work for - don't like, do't work.
