The long wait of people of the city to travel by Chennai Metro Rail will finally come to an end with the first service chugging off at noon today. Four years after work began, the first metro train will leave Alandur station for Koyambedu after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurates the project through a video conference, official sources said. The most eagerly awaited project will make Chennai stand alongside New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Jaipur to have metro connectivity. According to sources, the minimum fare may be Rs. 10 and the maximum Rs. 40 for this 10 kilometre stretch – with the ride expected to take less than 20 minutes. “When other corridors open, the fare for distances beyond 10 km will be decided. Also, there may be an additional discount for commuters who purchase Metro Rail smart cards,” an official said. Initially, there will be nine trains running between Koyambedu and Alandur with a frequency of about 10 minutes, officials said. The trains will halt for 30 seconds in each station. Though Chennai Metro Rail trains can travel at a maximum speed of 80 km/hour, they are expected to run about 35 km/hour. Each Chennai Metro Rail train can carry about 1,200 people. Hyderabad has atleast one route ready since months but our dear KCR is waiting to inaugarate Metro just before the municipal elections at the end of the year to blow his trumpet :banghead: Hope he does not paint the trains pink ( his party color ) though

Especially Europe. In India they compete against the two wheeler which is a lot more cost effective and efficient. For all we know electric scooties are the solution to a lot of problems....
G_B_ Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 and its not just India mind you, many chinese cities in the south (with tropical climate) are facing the same problem. Metros are high maintenance and cannot compete with two wheelers.

Metro construction in Bangalore is going on for 7-8 years and they cover a very small route. Dont they have some alternative technology which finishes faster and covers more areas? Worse Bangalore metro stations dont even have proper parking facilities for daily commuters to use metro..!

For all we know electric scooties are the solution to a lot of problems.... Even if they're replacing mostly cars, I would think that's good enough given the urban growth India has been experiencing for some time. What might really help is integrated transportation (bus=>metro or vice versa to get from primary point A=>B etc like they have in some major cities of the world) and parking facilities at major stops.

The same question comes up when some experts talk about the Ahmedabad BRTS as well, in the sense that the poor people can't always afford it. I really don't have an answer except I'm not sure if these already subsidized transport systems can be made cheaper or we are to simply have lower quality systems. How does the Delhi metro do it all so well from what I'm told ?

The Mumbai metro charges 40 for 10 km route one way and if Reliance had its way it would be more than that :--D but then Mumbai is a complexity in itself and the metro took far more time and cost than estimated :-/

Chennai has a suburban EMU train network with 3 separate lines and around 80 stations and 900 km slightly bigger than mumbai suburban in km covered. Then there is MRTS with 20 odd stations and another 30 kms, then there is this metro. Metro is connecting places previously only connected by Bus within the city

Metro is connecting places previously only connected by Bus within the city Chennai EMU train network is very effective but very unheralded unlike Mumbai EMU network. Frequency is good and trains are usually on time. You can reach from High Court or Marina Beach (Old Chennai) to Tirusulam (Chennai Airport) in 40-50 mins in just 10 rs. What else you can ask for? I used to take a cab when I wasn't aware of this which would cost me 400-500 and over an hour.
