Texan Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 Should be extended to all over India .Frankly it would be better if they just derecognize all Madrasas even if they teach Maths and Science No school should be allowed to teach religion to kids .Or run religion exclusive schools . Only thing wrong is the timing .Should have done earlier like in April or May.Most schools are open for a month now so transferring the students to other schools will be tough on the students Many convent schools also teach religion to Catholic kids. So, I think a blanket ban is unhealthy. What they should perhaps monitor is that no school is encouraging any kind of extremist behavior. Problem with madarsas is that they probably don't have any non-Muslim students, while convent schools have an almost equal proportion of Christian and Non-Christian students.
The Outsider Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Will Madrassas accept non-muslims as teachers? May be govt can ask the engineering students to volunteer for some community work just like how Doctors are supposed to do social service in their final year. They not only have non Muslim students, but teachers as well. Your suggestion is laughable because that option exists with the government even today to shore up its paucity of teachers in government schools but has had close to zero impact.

Which madarsas have non-muslims?
The Outsider Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Which madarsas have non-muslims? For example, Sampooran Singh Kalra Gulzar.
rkt.india Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 For example' date=' Sampooran Singh Kalra Gulzar.[/quote'] that must be 40-50 years ago. Also, you are talking about a few exception that cannot be sighted given as examples.
diga Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 For example' date=' Sampooran Singh Kalra Gulzar.[/quote'] is it an exception rather than the norm?
Detonator Posted July 6, 2015 Author Posted July 6, 2015 For example' date=' Sampooran Singh Kalra Gulzar.[/quote'] is it scientific? :haha:
Mariyam Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Great move. Much much needed. Breeding grounds of extremism. No, the are by and large, not breeding grounds of extremism. The image of a madrassa that you probably have in your mind is based on the madrassas on the Afghan-Pakistani border. Lets try and understand why madrassas exist in the first place. Or atleast have been proliferating at this rate. They are above above all an alternative to municipal schools for the poor. A place where the children may have some hope of getting decent education. The state school system has long since been dead and apart from the NCC there is nothing that those schools actually focus on. Let me break this into different categories: 1) Syllabus: Most madrassas have their content regulated by the state government. They DO NOT get an accreditation if they do not teach 'secular' subjects like Maths , Science , Social studies and English. Contrary to popular perception, Islamic studies are not compulsory. Not even for the Muslim students. The Madrassas also have their principal and secondary section teachers approved by the government. Where Madrassas lack vis a vis public schools is that they lack place for play grounds. That is because land is at a premium in Mumbai and unless you are the govt, you really cannot afford that kind of land. Hence, this news article, about de-recognizing Madrassas doesn't make much sense, because if they weren't teaching Maths and Science in the first place, they shouldn't be recognized. 2) Funding: Three main sources of monetary inflow for Madrassas 1) Government aid. 2) Charity, mainly from collections in local mosques. 3) Donations by wealthy individuals, and many a times by poor people in the area to set up a Madrassa for their kids. 4) Foreign funding at times. Here a lot of money is embezzled by the multitudes of middle men, govt officials and Islamic clergy. This blatant act of corruption is a sign of conformance with the mainstream. :D 3) Demographic break up of the students Most of the students are children of 1st generation migrants/ labour class people. Very few in that category move their families to Mumbai simply because they find it very expensive, but those that do, prefer Madrassas as hindi/urdu language public schools are few and far in between and they wouldn't want their kids to study in marathi medium public schools. The number of non muslims in the madrasas would astound you. In traditional/ older madrassas attached next to a prominent mosque , you wouldn't have many non muslims pupils. But the percentage increases drastically in the newer madrassas. In some madrassas in the Kings Circle area, non Muslim Tamilians are the majority. I don't have any concrete numbers on this, but based on observation and my rather poor computational and extrapolation skills I'd peg the number of non Muslims in statewide madrassas at about 10-15%. Will Madrassas accept non-muslims as teachers? May be govt can ask the engineering students to volunteer for some community work just like how Doctors are supposed to do social service in their final year. While still a student I had a stint with an NGO which was into teaching street kids. A part of that involved a few weeks of teaching English at a Madrassa. Most primary school teachers in Madrassas are students/ house wives etc who are sourced from NGOs and who work pro-bono. A shout out to the Malayali Christian community. Many of the ladies of that community who work as nurses in Mumbai also make time to teach various subjects in Madrassas. 5 of us friends were a part of the NGO. I was the only Muslim there. The proportion of Muslim teachers in secondary section, however is much more.
Mariyam Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 English can be excused .. math & science ke siva school :omg: I seriously thought they covered these subjects. On the contrary, I don't mind excluding maths and science after a certain level. Say grade 8th. But English/Accounting/ Civics/ introductory taxation just cannot be excused at all if one if to make a living in the India of today.
diga Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Thanks Mariyam, for that lengthy post.. good to hear about your social service I know a few people who volunteer at various schools, including Madrasas.Schooling in India is mostly about money in terms of facilities, good teachers.. I meant engineering students for science & maths.
The Outsider Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 that must be 40-50 years ago. Also' date=' you are talking about a few exception that cannot be sighted given as examples.[/quote'] From my experience in rural Central- Western UP, around 8-10%.
mishra Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 LOL @people being sold that non Muslims send kids to Madarasaa. If anything they may be sending kids for compulsion then conviction. When Mariyam quotes Indian Madarasaa aren't like Pakistani Madarasaa which is generally funded by Sauds seems proven correct by regularity at which Pakis Madarasaah keep producing legends who are ready to die or kill for a cause. My perception is, Indian Madarasa probably produce very little or no extremist compared to that of the ones going to regular schools and colleges. But state curriculum is a must for Madarsaah or any faith school. Teaching only religion is not education but propagating the religion.

Why cant religious studies be part of a University course? Story interviews Maulna, who is claiming his system is best, Maulanas allways claim that. When in doubt I rely on a Basic behavioral pricipal, They all want religious text shoved down the throat of innocent kids, But only their religious texts.
Texan Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 meanwhile..... http://www.mumbaimirror.com/mumbai/civic/Madrasas-win-over-BMC-run-schools/articleshow/48258656.cms Only the ones that don't teach English, Math and Science are going to be banned, not the ones that teach these subjects. So, if a madarssa is teaching these subjects and is better than a BMC run school, then great!
mishra Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 OK, So the fact aboutall this hooo haa is based on this statement. media Dilip Kamble, Mharashra State Social Justice Minister: “A child, male or female, if found studying only in religious institute which does not take government grant and does not follow formal school syllabus, will be considered uneducated and out-of-school,”
