zen Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 Not sure about its ROI numbers but it is a good move even from the point of view of a window dressing project as it sends positive signals about modernization initiatives in India. I have traveled via Bullet trains and hoped that something like this to come to Ind esp. for MUM-ABD corridor. An extension to Delhi would be nice. Traveling on nice, clean, and fast trains is fun. Only concerns is that it gets maintained well and cleanliness both inside the trains and outside is given paramount importance. In fact, the stations need to be modern with sufficient parking facilities, restrooms, restaurants, etc. to add to the excitement and convenience of traveling by such trains.

Japanese also bit desperate as they lost a project to China recently in Indonesia. So they will put addiitonal effort to get this done.

Bullet train > health, safety or schoolsThere’s more: the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train cost is almost 4X the amount the Centre is going to invest in rail safety in 2015-16.Just a week ago, India saw two train accidents claim 14 lives and the Indian rail system is one of the most unsafe in the world.Yet, precious money is being diverted from safety to needless luxuries like a bullet train.In fact, shockingly, the bullet train budget is 2.4X the entire amount the government of India is going to spend on the Indian Railways in 2015-'16.The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train budget is also 2.3X the entire spend of the Centre on schools. The corresponding figure for health and highways is 3.3 and 2.3, respectively.There is an interesting contrast here with healthcare. Hopefully Japanese railway is roped in for day to day operations as well. They are second in to none in that aspect.

Yeah agree....I visited Bodh Gaya in Bihar in the early 90's the maintenance for which is undertaken by the Japanese....it feels like it is a world of it's own considering the fact it is in Bihar.....It is not even a top 20 pilgrimage center in India but just the way this is maintained is surreal.

Indian Railway network is a decent asset and could really be amazing with the right investment and vision. Modi has a tendency to go for the big-ticket project, but I'd rather see across the board improvements even if they are smaller in scale.

There are two big ticket FDI projects started... 850 Electric loco by Alstom & 1000 Diesel Loco by GE....

Too often, our leaders are just focused on just winning elections and thus 5 years planning, That's the major reason why Congress led India underdeveloped severely. The benefits of Bullet Train won't be enjoyed now but it has a very powerful positive implication for the future.Much like the Mars project, haters will only hate, they can't stand India doing advancing in technology.
