7-4 combination ideal for India with current ODI rules?

Pitches these days are flat everywhere. 300 is par in most places now. Is there really a point with India continuing to play players like Jadeja/Gurkeerat/Axar?

They are A/R on paper but only contribute with ball or fielding. IMO India should revert back to 7-4 combination and use Rohit-Raina-Kohli as a 5th bowler. And go ahead with an extra bat.

No point playing an A/R just for the heck of it, try out a few on A-tours and then bring in someone who really has the potential. Until then it is just spoiling the balance of the side. What do ya'll think?

7-4 works when you have a genuine reliable set of pacers..

We did well with the 7-4 when we had Srinath, Zaheer, Nehra and a spinner..  We can go back to 7-4 when Ishant, Sran, Yadav can get that level of consistency in their bowling, with Ashwin / any one else as the spinner...

With our fast bowlers spraying it around, it always helps to have an additional bowler in the form of Jadeja or Pandya who can chip in with 6-8 overs, and contribute with the bat (at least this is the expectation)...  With flat pitches everywhere, there is also the thought that your 7th batsman doesn't really need to contribute and the top 6 can do the job.. Here is where we miss a hitter who can get 30(15) in the last few overs and can be the 5th bowler... Pandya looks the best of options we have.. Hope he gets in soon and does well...

At time of Srinath, zaheer, nehra there wasnt t20, pitches werent that flat n 300 was nt a regular score. N nt to forget we has sehwag, sachin sourav, yuvraj to roll their arm over add some time some like badani, rohan gavaskar, dinesh mongia, reetinder singh sodhi. That actually gave us many options

WIth todays time its nt a bad option but wats better is to have lower order batsman who cud bowl like- Pandya, gurkeerat mann, Raina, yuvraj ,Hooda, Irfan pathan(who bats more decently than axar n jadeja) rather other way around were we play bowler sho cud bat a bit like(jadeja, axar, rishi).

Better Batsman r prefered who cud give u some overs n we need a few of them as rohit, kohli bowling is nt gud n rahane doesnt bowl.

Its very imp to add fire power to that lower order who also cud give us bowling like other teams r doing with ( faulkner, Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, Corey anderson, Jp duminy, Ben stokes) All of them are match winners with bat N cud give u more than decent overs every match.

IMO you need to make changes as per opposition and pitch. Dont be rigid.

I feel Kohli is sticking rigidity to the 5 bowlers in test philosophy and MSD is doing the same with two spinners and three pacers outside the sub.

I do feel India need 5 bowlers as posters mentioned there are issues with reliability. Look at Sran, was good first two ODIs and went to pieces in the third.

Fair enough... Kohli did go with 7-4 in the last two tests against SA...

Flexibility based on pitch conditions is the key.. Wish the selectors realize it too... Three spinners in Australia, where we should be playing only 1 in the XI made no sense.

We can't play 4 bowlers, since 2 will get hammered on any type of pitch. Moreover, we don't have allrounders or even genuine part-timers.

Always 1-2 bowlers have bad day. Umesh yesterday. Booby in the game before that.

1-2 is the minimum. Likely to be 3 mostly (sometimes even 4).

I think bits and pieces players are fine but remember there is a cost. The cost is that they aren't very good at either. So what that means is on pitches where one factor is completely negated (e.g. bowling, which is becoming the norm nowadays), then they tend to be the ones that get targeted.

This would be my current ODI combination for India:

1. Rohit Sharma

2. Shikhar Dhawan

3. Virat Kohli (c)

4. Ajinkya Rahane - I think he could be a really good middle order batsman for India but his role is not made clear. He has all the shots of front and back foot and has the technique to score in all conditions.

5. Manish Pandey

6. Robin Uthappa (wk) - Dhoni is out of ideas and needs to go and Uthappa with his experience seems like a good replacement.

7. Rishi Dhawan - I still think he is worth persisting with even though he had a bad series against Australia. India badly need a seam bowling all-rounder and he is a better option than Binny.

8. Ravi Ashwin

9. Amit Mishra

10. Mohammad Shami / Jaspreet Bumrah

11. Umesh Yadav

Problem is that we don't have part timers anymore. Yuvi raina sehwag sachin ganguly were as good as 5th bowler. But we don't have those options anymore. You can use 7-4 option only when there are decent part timers in the team.

Yes, most people don't seem to realize that.

I don't think we necessarily need power hitters. We need guys that can score off every ball. To do that you need players that can

1. Score all round the ground, off front and back foot

2. Find the gaps

3. Run quickly.

1 and 2 require good technique and this is where Raina falls short a bit in bouncier conditions where his lack of technique limits his scoring opportunities. Guys like Rahane and Pandey who are more comfortable off front and back foot look better placed to fill that role. It just needs to be made clear to them that they are in the team to finish off the innings in that crucial 35-50 over mark.

Rahane does have the ability but needs to work on rotating the strike more.

Unnecessary batting depth. Jaddu at 8 is wasted - can't score fast enough and is not a penetrative enough spinner. Besides, 2 of these bowlers could easily have an off-day. Moreover, the No.6 is a keeper in your squad and Dhobi isn't cut out for this position any more. Right now, we haven't any keepers who are knocking the doors down for selection either. Binny should be nowhere near the team and neither should RIshi. Pandya has a lot to prove yet.

Rahane can rope in as a backup opener in case Dhawan fails. But he puts unnecessary pressure down the order. We have seen that many a times.

We are in need of Yuvraj kind of player at 5. I am confident if we give enough exposure to potential players they can our power hitters.

Jadeja is not an alrounder, he's a bowler who could hack a bit with the bat. That's all he ever was.

Jaddu is not even a bowler. Check out his bowling record... it's pretty terrible when compared against Ashwin, Axar and Mishra in ODIs. the former and latter shoudl represent our first 2 choices possibly. If we need a parsimonious left arm spinner, Nadeem or Axar might be better

There are no potential players who can duplicate what Yuvi brought at his peak - destructive batting, fairly good finishing, good fielding and very useful part-time bowling.

Yuvraj was a genuine batting all rounder, which India do not have. But even Yuvraj was not that consistent outside India. I think Rahane can improve but I feel that he needs to be made clear that his role is to pick the gaps and rotate the strike regularly. We need to work on getting 1s and 2s off every ball first and then look at big shots.

That's the area Rahane needs to improve on but I think he can do it.
