Power hitting options

If I had to make a list of all the power hitters that I am aware of currently in India, most of them are has-beens though

r.uthappa- should get a shot

y.pathan- what is he doing these days???

i.pathan- better batsman than gurkeerat(from what I have seen) and jadeja and even on his worst days better than rishi dhawan and binny.... Can play as a bits and pieces

harbhajan- clean hitter.... Very underrated.... There were times when we used to get that additional impetus with bhajji slogging a few..... His bowling has gone down hill but can be tried in loi format.... Can't be a strike bowler anymore but as long as he can keep the runs down.... Why not?

yuvi- does he have it in him for another last hurrah.... T20 wc final looked like it sealed his fate but he has another sniff at getting another shot... Can he make it count???

raina- sitting duck against genuine pace but still by miles among the current set of players who are in realistic contention, the best lower order power hitter

it is sad that most in this group of power hitters look like a blast from the plast or names that would be in contention a decade back but on proven credentials alone they are better than the current lot.

now let's look at the new gen.

iyer- if he is in the same mould like virat or rohit, a proper Batsman who can attack then he needs to be in the middle order.... Don't think we should waste his potential making him a lower order slogger.... Ur views?

pandya- most exciting prospect in indian cricket now .... Let's see how he does in internationals

negi- liked what I saw in ipl but don't think neither his batting or bowling is international class.... I mean you can't depend on him in situations like say 90/6.

sarfaraz- could be our maxwell.... Very innovative player.... Fitness and attitude problems already? Needs to get his head straight but looks tailormade for the 6-7 slot.

and special mention

binny- better than rishi dhawan that's about it.... Has the ability to play fast bowling but looks horrible against spin.... Saw a bit of hitting in Zimbabwe but hasnt had a consistent run despite having a good bowling average....better batsman than jadeja.

It is sad that most names mentioned are either washed up or has beens.... Is dhoni right about the cupboard being bare?

Posted

Forgot to mention

sanju samson- just like iyer looks like a proper middle order bat....but can we get him in and try to see if he can be the lower order hitter if he is the heir apparent to dhoni.

I remember Aussies playing both gilchrist and Healy for some time before gilly became ready to take over.

this Is what pisses me off.... no long term planning.... No vision

Also people were calling the likes of gurkeerat and rishi dhawan capable hitters and lower order players..... So for now will stick to the old guard....the names I mentioned above.

gurkeerat may have some ability with the bat but his bowlng was the definition of lollipops...:. Can't believe he gets wickets in domestics

Negi can be an option. Bowling is ok but batting is much better than Jadeja. I have seen him smacking fast bowlers and spinners both. He did well in VH trophy. For a little guy he packs a punch.

Rayudu?

Old Man Dhoni does like his biryanis

At this moment anybody is a better option than relying on Dhoni & Jadeja down the order. By a distance the current team with regards to its middle and lower order is the weakest in the world. Even Eng have blooded in younger talent and turned it around with the likes of Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow.

For all his 6 hitting Pandya have a SR of 125 from 38 T20 matches....may be pretty poor initially....

Stats don't tell the whole story.  He may struggle making the step up to the international level, but if you watch him bat, he's decent.  Look at the trendline in his last 15-20 games, it might be better.

But the harsh truth is India don't really have top-shelf power hitters at the moment.  We churn out a factory assembly line of quality bats though, which is not something to scoff at.

May be...but don't want some one hits lot of sixes but SR remain less than 130....But any way he deserve whatever chance het gets.

People are building really high expectations from Pandya and if he fails, same will say he was hyped. He didn't hype himself up. It is you guys who are hyping hum up like saviour of all our hitting problems. He has a long way to go and a lot learn in that journey. Same for Iyer, hooda, gurkeerat, etc. They won't become world beaters as soon as they are selected. Our players take time to develop and to reach the standard of highest level of cricket. Keep expectations low from youngsters. It is better to be surprised if somehow they do well rather than be shocked if they fail.

Very true.

It is important to give the right kinds of players a chance ...and then give them time to mature and develop.

Not jump on every bad performance of  youngsters....and not expecting them to perform immediately.

Rkt and other followers of domestics.... How is sarfaraz? People say he is kind of a maxwell type innovative slogger/ batsman

Don't you watch IPL?

not boring RCB matches :--D

on a serious note can't take what he does over a few overs in IPL seriously..... Even ashish reddy, bisla and bhatia smack the bowling around.

didnt see any innings of note from him in ipl  but just going by his reputation was curious if he does things like that consistently in domestics or not ?

Why is Iyer not considered? He seemed to have the technique to do well in internationals when I saw him last year's IPL.
May not have the reputation of Hooda or Pandya but he could be someone who can be solid with the bat, strike partnerships and also have the power game when required. No point of choosing a power hitter if he hasn't got the technique to play international quality bowling. He'll be found out sooner or later. No problem with including Pandya as he fills the role of an all rounder. Watching R Dhawan play is disgraceful.

Deepak Hooda, Pawan Negi, H Pandya, Irfan P, K Jadhav is a proper bat with excellent wrist n can be versatile, M Agarwal, PANDEY ,Gurkeerat, Sarfaraz all should be tested as they have potential, also Saurav Tiwary has done well but he seemed a hack when I last saw him by for India, Mandeep Singh can be versatile, u don't need a strong powerful guy always but the ability to hit is more then that.

Personally would love a revamp of ODI side

Rohit

Rahane

Virat

C Pujara

Jadhav bats n can keep

M Pandey

H Pandya

Amit Mishra/K Yadav

Deepak Hooda

Irfan Pathan

Ishant

Aaron

Aniket

Umesh/Shami if Shami is unfit as he is our strike bowler

Suresh Raina

Will be my choice as a ODI squad, young ,promising, have time to develop n under Kohli he will help make them stepup n be confident, Sran I promising but unfit n needs some work as he can barely bowl two overs n then to low 120,maybe under Kohli he would do better.

Raina is not too old n has won games also his weakness is not too exposed lower down in ODIs, he can add that experience n a backup, Pujara can bat in ODi n I have seen that, him scoring two big back to back ODI last year for VH I think, also at an awesome S/R n can hold our batting on a spicy track.

Aniket a tall left Armer who can hit the deck at good pace n has performed excellently for Rajasthan.

Pandya and iyer are ready for international cricket. You can make out from their attitude..

Iyer seemed more of a slogger to me.. Not sure if he has the right temperament yet for ODIs.. Would like to see more of him in List A matches

He is a 19 year old youngster. You won't become Maxwell at that age, too young, too inexperienced. Not even a comparison. People here are very naive expecting rookies just coming from domestic cricket in their teens or early 20s playing like seasoned international cricketers.
