After the video went viral, Ms Rai was made to re-sit her exams, and was arrested after she failed and had her original results cancelled. She was produced in court on Sunday where a magistrate sent her to jail until 8 July. The decision to send her to prison has been criticised given that she is a minor and should, therefore, be sent to a detention home for juveniles. The Hindu newspaper quoted Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj as saying that Ms Rai would have to "prove" that she was a minor. He did not specify how. One state minister told reporters that authorities needed to make the system accountable instead of punishing students. Meanwhile, arrest warrants have been issued for several other students who performed well in the exams, including Saurabh Shrestha who topped the science stream, but later could not say that H2O was water. The AFP news agency quoted police as saying that another 18 people had been arrested. Examiners who retested Ms Rai told reporters they were "shocked" by her performance. When asked to write an essay about the Indian poet Tulsidas, she only wrote "Tulsidas ji pranam (Salutations to Tulsidas)". Last year, parents of students in the state were photographed climbing school walls to pass on answers. The embarrassed state government had announced tough measures like fines and jail terms, intended to curb cheating this year. The markedly lower pass rate seen in the results announced last month was taken as an indication that the steps had worked. That is, of course, until the footage of Ms Rai's interview was aired. They should not be allowed any jobs, and their records must be registered for offence. This will make other student restrain from taking such path. tweaker 1

Why not sentence her to death, and spare everyone else?
dial_100 Posted June 29, 2016 Posted June 29, 2016 Dude, who is asking others be spared. Relax. The crime was proved and she was put in jail. Where is the problem. If your point is that those in administration allowed this to happen and they should be punished severely as well is absolutely justified. But officials and administrative staff is pro at such cheating and unless there is incriminating evidence against them it is impossible to catch someone. I fail to understand why some of us are against the 17 yo being put in jail. I don't get it.

That's like giving harsher punishments to drug users than drug dealers. That too drug users who are kids.

The cheater had done crime against the other honest students and has affected many more other lives. An addict is only harming himself. If it had not been plastered all over our newss channels, they would have easily got away. I have some friends who have genuine degrees from Bihar University. I feel for them. From now on, nobody is going to trust a degree from Bihar. Credibility has been quashed.

Just because his father over cheated , she is punished had she just secured very good marks then nobody would had touched her kosingh 1

The SIT has written to the Board, asking it to submit a report in this connection soon. Patna's superintendent of police Chandan Kushwaha told Rediff.com that the SIT has asked the Board to explain how Ruby's answer sheets have gone missing and who all are responsible for it. “Some Board officials are suspected to be involved in it but the police will take action only after the Board submits its report,” Kushwaha said. According to SIT officials, they wanted to send Ruby’s answer sheets to Hyderabad for a forensic examination to verify her handwriting. However, the answer sheets of one subject -- home science -- were missing from the Board office. Ruby had scored 444 marks out of 500 in Class 12 examinations. However, a controversy erupted after she failed to answer basic questions related to her subjects on camera, leading the Board to conduct a re-test. The Board cancelled her result after she failed the re-test. Ruby, who was arrested last Saturday, told the police that it was one ‘Bachcha chacha’ and her father who ‘helped’ her top the exam, apparently referring to Bachcha Rai, former director and principal of V R College in Bihar’s Vaishali district, who was also arrested earlier this month in connection with the exam fraud and is currently lodged in Patna jail. The SIT probing the case considers Baccha to be the kingpin of the scam. The SIT had arrested Ruby after a first information report was lodged against her and three other toppers.
