It's winning that matters .

Even the Champions League needs only four ties to win the trophy.

Which is why I said it's is the most important crown in the game...

You become no1 only when you win....

Nope u don't .It is just a trophy for consistency.P Pakistan was awarded the maze for ex after the drawn series with England .

There is the difference. In no serious team sport does fans celebrate reaching no.1 rankings. Its about winning .

If u can't differentiate between winning the wold cup and reaching the top of rankings then it's better to leave it at it

Pakistan haven't lost a single series in UAE. No one simply become no1.

If you wanna take case to case then don't you think home advantage was a big part of Australia winning the WC given how they are struggling in SA?

It's just how you see things..

No point in arguing WC vs Test Mace. To each his own.  WC definitely has more audiences but the keen fan does follow the mace closely.

But test mace for me is very satisfiying, because tests are inherently much more difficult than LOI's for instance look at BD they can beat any side in LOI but are clearly week in tests.

So it's moved from winning to not losing ?

As I said it is a trophy for maintaining consistency just like any other no.1 ranking .No one ,I repeat,no fan actually celebrates these in any sports .At best it is just a recognition and at worst it is for history records .

It's winning the world cup.It doesn't matter how shite u are for years after that. Its the moment .That's why fans celebrate .How many over the top celebrations have u seen for reaching the no.1 rankings .

It's trophies and titles that matters for fans not some meaningless rankings .

But if u think its the pinnacle of cricket , good for u .I am off this debate .

Popularity doesn't necessarily correlate with degree of achievement. Just because more fans celebrate LOI tournaments it doesn't mean painstakingly maintaining consistency over months and getting due recognition for it becomes meaningless.

We shouldn't be mixing up the formats here. If there's a cup tournament for tests I would assume it would receive greater attention than just rankings that seem drab and "meaningless" to the average fan.

Exactly... even WI is a wc champion.. but look at their test match performance....

Sports are for fans and they give it context .So popularity is what defines what is pinnacle in any sport .

Tests no1 is earned in the longest format with almost a year's results mattering.

As far as I know, the performance of the last 4 years, with extra weightage to the performance of the last 2 years, decides the rankings.

You can reach no.1 in test matches only by winning multiple test series in the recent past.

We have had to win 4 test series in a row, 2 of them away from home....to reach no.1 now.

BTW have we been No1 before (apart from once under Dhoni) or this is only the second time?

well deserved,

just don't think Pakistan was no.1 material.

They would not got even that if the fourth test vs WI wouldn't have been a washout.
