MARK MY WORD - Rishabh Pant to be the next Virat Kohli of Indian cricket

The Hood was averaging 42.5 prior to this season - which in Indian domestic FC is not high (also remember Baroda's home pitches were not Lahli). As for Saini, his batting has generally been improving over the past couple of seasons (regardless of avg). Hence, it's not surprising that it's risen eve higher, given that Lahli is not a factor. Kamat has mostly scored because of pattas.

Compared to the past, because of home advantage being nullified, I feel that this season has been more batting friendly. Last season, there were raging turners.

Hooda's averaging 42 had nothing to do with pitches because Baroda mostly plays their homes games at batting friendly Reliance stadium. It's more of good form and getting better.

You mentioned he was avg nearly 50, and while he was good, his avg was not that high. Became a lot more consistent this season.

If I remember he probably did average 50 in one of the seasons. Don't remember but his last season probably wasn't great.

This year there's been a spurt of big scores - first year with neutral venues for all Ranji games.

Some other outliers - Nitin Saini 28 year old Haryana Wicketkeeper, who nobody has heard of, or cares about, with a career FC average of 35 is averaging 83, already scored 700+ runs.   Sagun Kamat 34 year old career average 35, averaging 65.  Deepak Hooda - uptill now only known for a few good slogged innings in IPL - averaging 88.  Old man Yuvraj - averaging almost double his career FC number.

Could it be, that some of these runs are inflated due to batting friendly tracks?

This has been the case with most Ranji seasons

Looks at the number of lesser known batsmen with high averages in two of the earlier seasons, 2013-14 and 2015-16

What stands out about Pant is the high SR while scoring at a very high average....which would make him a very interesting LOI prospect as a batsman

Jadhav and Iyer had a high number of runs at a very good SR

yes, he had a below average last season, averaging 35 the reason his overall average took a hit which was around 50 before that.

Jadhav could have been a good ODI batsman if introduced at a relatively earlier age.   Being left in the cold for a long time often takes the spark out of a  domestic player.

Iyer is still a good prospect but has to sort out his short ball problems.

Which is why I am interested in seeing Pant actually bat in a 4 day game and / or against quick bowlers. I want to see how he handles quick deliveries, short rising deliveries,   does he have a good idea about where his off-stump is and does he play away from his body ?

What puts Pant ahead of these guys is his age and the fact that he is scoring at a very high average and high SR in his effective transition year from junior to senior cricket....and also the fact that he plays almost all his innings at more than a run a ball.

I don't see short ball as a huge problem. Short ball is a problem only when your front foot stops moving due to the anticipation of short ball like in case of Raina.

Jadhav blossomed a bit late too - as for Iyer, more than short ball, I am more worried about his handling of full, inswinging deliveries based on the 1-2 snippets I saw (I could obviously be wrong).

After scoring very  heavily and at a high SR  in 2013, Jadhav has got very few chances against non-minnows in the next 3 years.

Even in 2013, he was 28... hence, I'd mentioned he blossomed a bit late (only when compared to Iyer, Hooda and Pant)

India will keep churning batsmen. When Mane and Gambhir were making news as young batsmen, one disappeared into oblivion other one made great sides had a decent stint with Indian side. Same way Kambli/Sachin made news but only Sachin lasted longer.  We may think X and Y are the next big thing some Z will sneak in :)

I think  he has been doing well in List A for quite some time.

Rishabh Pant will either  surpass Virat Kohli  as a batsman or will not make it in international cricket.

Don't see any middle-path with this kid.

There could be.. the Rohit Sharma way? Look it's easy to draw comparisons, let's not hype him up as yet. That's the habit of terrorist neighbors..

What we do here is immaterial.  We take forum life too seriously.

What matters is what popular media and ex-players do....like this statement from TA Sekhar....and articles on Cricinfo, Cricbuzz , popular newspapers  etc.

Another issue is....in this age of hyperactive media....every new talent has to take a lot of hype and media attention.  Only those who can cope with it will survive.

p.s - Rohit Sharma has been an extremely successful ODI and T20 batsmen and we tend to forget that.

Of course, I'm a fan. He doesn't play to his potential. That's what I'm trying to say
