Hope the chennai ICFers can update here us about the situation in Chennai and how its going to affect 5th test.

NB: I know a cricket test is least of their worries at the moment and whatever is going on is really sad. Hope the storm passes very soon and stay strong

I am very skeptic about the Chennai test bringing any result.

The current Vardha storm has crossed but there is a lot of rain happening in Chennai. Usually, there will be 1 or 2 more storms coming one after the other. So, even though the current one is gone, expect rains for next 1 week or so, which means, Chennai test will have days or sessions getting completely washed out. Definitely 15 sessions not going to happen in this test and which means, we may get only a draw out of the possible sessions.

 

By the way, I just returned from Mumbai yesterday night, after watching all 4 days and 0.5 hour of the 4th test. Mumbai was surprisingly chilly :) Enjoyed it

Hopes of the fifth Test between India and England going ahead as per schedule have brightened with Kasi Viswanathan, the secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, confirming that cyclone Vardah, which swept through Chennai on Monday, has not unduly affected the pitch and outfield at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. He said, however, that the cyclone had caused other damage in and around the stadium, including to the sightscreens.

The Test match is scheduled to begin on Friday.

"The assuring part is that the pitch and the outfield has not been affected by the cyclone," Viswanathan told PTI. "But sightscreen has been damaged. The bulbs have blown off, air conditioners damaged.

"There have been hundreds of tree trunks lying in the road leading up to the stadium. Our challenge is to set everything in order in the next two days. I am confident we will be able to set everything right."

Viswanathan also confirmed that the three stands of the stadium that have been locked by the Chennai Corporation for the last three years over a dispute with the TNCA would remain closed during the Test match.

Stupid BCCI scheduling:wall:... Chennai gets most of its rain during North-west monsoon mid Oct to Dec period. 

 BCCI should consider local weather trends before scheduling matches if they want to avoid a WI & SA test fiasco.

Guys believe me. This match will be a draw. Kasi Viswanathan may be optimistic about the match starting because they can get the damages cleared on time for friday.  But chennai rains dont stop so soon. I have lived all my life in Chennai and now in Bangalore. The rains will return for sure. We may get 2-3 days of play. Definitely 1 or 2 days will be washed out for sure and there could be few sessions washed out as well or due to wet outfields. I sat through atleast 3 test matches that ended in draw due to not getting enough sessions. 1995 vs New Zealand, 2004 vs Australia, 2005 vs Sri Lanka,

Its sad that the series will end with a 3-0 scoreline instead of 4-0. 

Living in Bangalore these days I had the option of going to either Mumbai test or Chennai test. Chennai would have been easier and cheaper for me as I can stay in my house. Fearing the weather I decided to go to Mumbai instead and got to to see a full test match although it burnt a huge hole in my pocket. But its much better then buying a ticket, sitting in the stands watching rain or wet outfield being cleared ;)

They are not going to move the match. Tamil Nadu cricket Association will not let that happen. Match will happen in Chennai, we will lose a lot of play, and there will be a draw.

This is bad time for test matches in Chennai.

Unrelated to the topic, but how difficult is it to get into Indian stadiums these days? I haven't been to a cricket match in India for 2 decades, but would like to one this year. Getting a ticket seems easy enough, but the long lines they show on TV waiting to get in seems to be very uncomfortable. And how is it once you are in-- comfort, lines for food, cleanliness and accessibility of bathrooms etc?

Wikipedia and others state just monsoon periods which are not always correct. In actuality having lived in Chennai for years I know that the monsoon stops by November. This link shows actual average precipitation by month and Dec is one of the drier months and Jan is the driest month of the year.

Interesting..

 

Indian Met Dept predicts scattered showers all 5 days 16-20. 

 

BBC has no rain forecasts any 5 days of the tests 

 

weather.com has 19th/20th partially.

 

 Interestingly - the betting companies like bet365.com who factor all this in the result odds as of now for the Chennai test have ...very long odds for a draw ( 3/1 )

 

They would be washed out with odds such as 3/1 if most well informed people think its going to be draw because of rain .

 

Therefore i would bet on the BBC weather forecast.

 

We should get 4 days play at the least .....
