Very few players are good in T20 and bad in Odis .Infact the only one I can think of is Pollard.

The proportion with test cricket is far bigger .

Off the top of my head....Yusuf Pathan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Aaron Finch and we have seen many more T20 specialists.

There are many pacers who are able to sustain pace  or energy for 4 overs but not for 10....there are many batsmen who are able to bats for 10 odd balls and play a quick cameo but are all at sea if they have to come in before the 40th over in ODIs.

Yusuf Pathan is rubbish.Didnt even make it into Indian T20 team properly.Found out comfortably. He simply isnt good enough for International cricket

Bhuvi isnt a regular for for our T20 team either.is skill sets are pretty similar whether odis of T20s or even Tests for that matter.

Finch  I agree.

Compare that with ODI to Test cricket or Test cricket to ODIs. VVS ,Raina,Yuvraj,Dhawan,Rahane,Agarkar,Rohit.Thats just from top of my head and India alone. Some of them are greats of the game in one format.

But if you are good in T20s its very rarely he fails in ODIs.

Yusuf Pathan averages 30.6  with a SR of 146  in the IPL after playing all of 134 matches.   Can't call him rubbish in that format.

If we are stating players who have succeeded in either ODIs or T20s ( like you stated for tests and ODIs ) then we have  Dhawan, Shami, Yusuf,  Bhuvi off the top of my head from only India too.

They succeed in Odis and struggled in T20s.As I said in my initial post it's very rare players have success in T20s and struggle in Odis .It's common sense as well.If u are a very good T20 player, then the only quality needed is the ability to play a longer innings .Which is a quality that has to be guagued .

As for Yusuf Pathan,he is a rubbish in International cricket whether Odis or T20s.Ots like listing Ranji players not succeeding in International cricket. There is a difference between not good enough for different formats and simply not good enough for International cricket.Vinay Kumar has had some great IPL seasons as well as Ranji seasons.Yet he is a failure in International cricket in every format. It wasn't because he can't adopt to formats but because he isn't International quality .Same with Yusuf .

Shami isn't a failure in T20s .He just hasn't played enough T20s for us.And has been often unlucky with injuries.

Thing is with dhoni right now he is best choice defo . But will he be in 2 years time . Would a pant if given a run till then develop in to world beater ???

dhoni in terms of glove work is a contradiction. Standing up to the stumps he may best ever seen . Still best in india easy. Standing back he is one of worst keepers in test cricket history. And in terms of general energy which inspires the team as keepers do he also is appqling at this .

batting wise in Odis right now he needs a big series here. As if pant or kishan explode in ipl then people may clamour for them .

Pant and kishan i Han I have a feeling their glove work is very raw . But 2 years of keeping and exposure in the big time who knows what they become ?

are we brave enough to make the call ?

Dhoni Today batted at 5 also with a strike rate of 168 .Now that makes it interesting.

Is this the right no. for him till the world cup ?

SR got a big boost because of a big last over.  Don't read too much into a warm up game.  And I say that as an alleged dhoni "fan".   He has to show more than this.

On a bit of a tangent - but today's 1st innings batting is a classic example of 'old' India batting template.  Top order bats with a 'build innings' strategy - conserve wickets, score at a decent rate, one of the top 4 gets a 100, and a late push for big runs.  This method minimizes the possibility of collapses and sub-par totals, but also ensures that we end up in the low 300s most of the time.   No surprise that a Dhoni-led team put 304 on the board.

We need to change up our template to bat with more initiative in the 1st 35 overs, especially in 5 to 15 overs.  take a bit more risk, but aim to get 340+ as a default instead of 300.  And we need to make this tactical change a couple of years before WC 2019 so the batters get used to the approach and work out the kinks.  I have been calling for this change since before WC2015, but it just hasn't happened.  Have to hope that under VK's captaincy, things will change soon.

See this guy is blocking pant from keeping

crying shame

pant should replace this guy . 2 years time for World Cup pant could be awesome

no vision and dhoni selfishly hanging on

big ipl from pant to capture headlines may force dhoni to quit

Again thanks to another batsman at the other end who was batting really well and scoring boundaries, that allowed dhoni to keep tuk tuking and then increase his strike rate in the last 3-4 overs. I'd like to see Dhoni attacking and see if he still has the same impact he used to have.

We need someone like Dhoni in the middle order who can control the innings in the 15 to 40 over stage - can't expect that VK will never fail.  MS can do that job really well.  What he can't do is be expected to blast away from ball 1.  That job is now for Yuvi, Jadhav, Pandya.  Dhoni @ 4/5 is not a problem, he's part of the solution - provided he keeps delivering like he did today.  If the frequency of Pune type innings is higher than Cuttack type ones, he's a goner.  And I'm sure he knows it well.
