And what's Gilchrist territory? He was a strictly serviceable keeper, nothing more.

Agreed, nothing extraordinary, but would not drop any catches from spinners or pacers. No lightening fast stumpings, no blind run-outs and no diving in front of second slip to grab blinders.

Not expecting those from Pant. As long as he is reliable behind the stumps, have no cause to complain!

All straightforward catches as seen in the highlights.. will need to see longer clips to see if he is Parthiv category or Gilchrist territory..

You will be amazed to know how many straight-forward catches many Ranji keepers drop    :)

Gilly was not a great keeper when he started ..in fact the whole Warne-Gilchrist feud was because Warne was totally against Gilchrist calling him a poor keeper. Gilchrist worked the hard yards to become what he eventually became with the gloves, even though the batting flair was right there from the start. With Pant we have someone special....A mercurial game-changing batsman and surely not a make-shift keeper, someone who has obviously trained all his life to be a keeper at the grass roots level.

He is ready but yes Test matches will be a lot more grueling and for now Saha is doing ok with the gloves...so need to ease him in tests but he should keep in all LOI matches...Dhoni can play as  abatsman.

If pants keeping his suspect and work in progress . Then no issues playing him in all limited overs formats as keeper / bat . Let him learn on the job and by World Cup may be ok.

but for tests to be the keeper/bat needs to be proper ready . And display his glove work is ready in odis and ranji. Of course can play as pure bat in tests but would suggest some odi series first to showcase he is ready .

No one denies that....It was so obvious to see that this kid was special based on the way he took apart world class bowlers in the IPL at 18.

Proved that was no flash in the pan when he was absolutely killing it in his first season of domestics.

He needs to be polished at the international level rather than languishing in domestics playing low quality bowling.

He should be ready for tests in the next year or so.

Gilly was a very poor keeper when he started.  So many dedicated aussie fans called him Irongloves and "Clang" for the hard hands and drops that he put up regularly.  And he didn't have to keep much against spin - can't say the same about any Indian 'keeper.  Let's not limit our expectations and requirements for Team India 'Keepers - I don't want to see any Parthiv level 'keepers wearing national colors ever again.

SheikhChilly, where did I make any claims about Panth not being ready?  Fact is, nobody here can authoritatively claim he is or he isn't.  And you not "respecting my acumen" is a yyuuge compliment.  Thanks.

Gilly was not a very poor keeper when he started . Defo improved and became top notch . But poor no chance

thing with gilly was he took over from an atg in terms of glove work in Healy . That made him loook worse then reality .

One thing is certain he became best gliveman in world cricket

No one has seen Pant keep because none of the Ranji matches this season were televised .

So all this stuff about Pant as wicket keeper may not be ready is pure speculative nonsense .

It's high time Pant gets in the test team.

No one says is not ready . But no one can say he is ready

the point is no one knows yet

all to be revealed soon :phehe:

The fact is,he is a once in a generation talent with the bat...unless he is Kamran Akmal re incarnate than I don't see why we need to be too worried about his keeping.

If Gilchrist can take his keeping to the next level in his mid 20's than sure a 19 year old has a huge upside especially when he is batting like a dream at the moment.

Tests sure...Saha has not done too bad to be totally discarded....he needs to be a understudy and in the scheme of things but yes this is our future.

As I said he has to be Kamran Akmal level bad and Afridi level brain dead for us to panic.
