When his family decided to flee the country, they were unsure of the dangerous journey ahead. They had to cross a raging river, climb dangerous mountains, trespass two international borders, all dodging various armies and their bullets. “It took many days, anybody could have killed us thinking we were terrorists. They didn’t know we were ourselves running away,” says the 21-year-old.

When Abdulla finally made it to Bengal, he had relatives for shelter. Many others just asked a passer-by which was the safest place for Muslims in the alien country. “Hyderabad” was one of the replies, while some others were told Delhi and Kashmir. Armed with just this advice, over 3,500 (according to recent registrations by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees) Rohingyas found their way into Balapur, in south eastern Hyderabad.

India needs a better policy in place for the Rohingyas.  These are probably ethnically bengali muslims who have lived in Burma/Myanmar for generations.   Genetically they are our people.  Bangladesh it seems can't afford to provide facilities for them,  Indian Govt should provide generous funds either to Bangladesh, or host refugees directly.   Its the right thing to do.

Good on India providing asylum to Rohingyas.

But isn't Pakistan or Bangladesh the safest place for "Muslims" in sub-continent. I thought Muslims were under attack everyone in India because of beef bans, cow vigilantes lynch mobs, not standing up for Vanda Mataram and calls to stop Azaan.

Especially Bangladesh  should be logical choice when it's so nearby.

cant wait for the next comedy edition of US Human Rights Report section on India.

If Sunnis truly believe that they are the chosen ones, that their religion/culture is so much more superior to the rest, why do they choose kafir countries like India/Germany/UK/France and not Sunni-Islamic countries like Pakistan, UAE, Saudi etc? Right from their birth they seem to hate Jews, Christians, Hindus, Shias, Ahmedis, Buddhists, Jains but somehow always settle in the countries of the much maligned infidels.
