Hardik Pandya as bowler

in the current match (vs SL) he finished with 2/49 of 10 overs, he has had decent year in International cricket

and currently by numbers exceeding Ben Stokes in all departments, though early days, but nevertheless has better numbers than Ben Stokes, who in ODIs concedes more than 6 rpo after over 50 innings

the one weak link(s) India had in ODI, have been removed, Ashwin and Jadeja, current bowling unit is a huge improvement compared to having these two

doing better than stokes in odis is not difficult. stokes is not that good in odis. better comparison is with watto and pandya falls short with the ball and bat at this point; hopefully, he will improve and get better.

really? has to be step by step process, if I recall Watson was pretty average in his first 50 games and plagued by fitness issues too

so far with limited opportunities Pandya has demonstrated a decent returns, definitely an upgrade in over India's last pace bowling all-rounder, Stuart Binny

Stokes was and is poor odi bowler really

pandya you have to remember is in as multi dimensional player . He would get in to white ball team purely on his explosive batting . Add to that brilliant fielder and decent bowler (not finished article ) must pick

will only get better . Also may benefit from bowling on overseas pitches . But defo needs work on bowling but has improved bowling massively in last year

sure he's better than binny, but that's not a difficult thing to achieve.

Too many excuse for this guy, teams are going after him because they  obviously know he is by far the weakest link in the team right now.

we need another bowling option in top 6 to share 10 overs with him or he has to play in top 6 himself

He is a work in progress though a valuable member of the team due to his all round abilities including fielding. While the intangibles include the do or die spirit .... In non subcontinent conditions, he could be more useful as a bowler

In ODIs, you would need 4 specialist bowlers, which could include 3 seamers, and Pandya (5th bowler). If one of the specialist batsmen can roll his arms over, it would provide additional options (6th bowler) to the team

Coming back to Pandya’s bowling. One also has to see how good the bowling replacement is. If the replacement is specialist bowler, he better be able to make up for the loss of Pandya’s batting and fielding contributions just with the ball (not seen too many quick bowlers with Pandya’s fielding abilities), a difficult task to achieve

This is the immediate solution we need to look into. None if our top 5 batsmen bowl and that is a big disadvantage. Atleast 2 batsmen should be able to share the 10 overs with pandya. Shankar and hooda are good options.

We also need to try other players for the alrounder slot like sundar, k goutham, krunal pandya.

He is no longer hitting 140 as earlier leave alone 145.

He is now well within 127-135...why is he trundling?

Pace was his only forte because he has very limited skills and bowling intelligence.

At this rate he will be out of the team and soon forgotten because we will find better batsman than him sooner than later, who can tonk the ball as well.

I don't know specifically in pandya's case, but the question you ask is one that Indians ask about all of their pacers: munna, RP, even irfan, etc. all witnessed varying drops in speed.

But that issue was arrested in recent times...

Probably pandya needs more strength training to sustain waer n tear at international level.

Because I'm damn sure shanker is more skillful at 125kph and better batsman too.

I think shankar is much worse as a long-format (i.e. test) bowler. it's also reflected in his very poor FC record. However, he is certainly more of a "proper" batsman in the sense that he's mostly played in the top order and shouldered responsibilities of a regular batsman. I see him more as a batsman who bowls part-time rather than as a batting all-rounder in tests. In ODIs, he could prove to be a batting allrounder.

Agree but wasn't hardik fast tracked solely because of his pace.

A proper fast bowling all rounder.

If he loses that coupled with his reckless batting I dont think he will survive for long.

One good thing pandya has in favour . Is that capable of bowling high 80s delivery . So some thing to work with there

He bowled a very well disguised knuckle ball, and a surprise slower yorker, in the games against Australia.  There's a lot of evidence that he's working on his game.

Obviously Pandya has all the right tools discussed to death on here......great striker of the ball and can hit 140k's.

Till the Australian series,I was thinking the management was handling him very well, promoting up the order to take up responsibility with the bat, test opportunity against weaker teams like Srilanka....To his credit has done well, but I think he was overworked a little and now it is just my personal view and feel free to disagree but I think he has lost a little momentum he had till the Aussie series.

I am not sure how confident I am if he plays at No.6 in South Africa....yeah the usual he will make more 5 more runs than specialist bats or give the top 3 bowlers a break argument aside,I think he has lost a bit of form.

I think Pandya is a good LOI player and very valuable at that. As you say, he is not that good to be a number 6 batsman in tests. He needs more experience with playing more ODIs and T20s. When he improves him bowling to the level of say, Jacques Kallis, he should be brought into the test team.
