Jharkhand: 300 Muslim families speak out, return dowry in silent protest

Quote

A silent and unique social transformation is sweeping the Muslim community in Jharkhand’s Palamu region, with hundreds of families returning dowry they had taken during their sons’ weddings.

Over the last one year, around 800 families came out in the open about accepting dowry and have subsequently returned the money. To date, over Rs 6 crore in cash has been returned to the brides’ families.

This process kicked off once Haji Mumtaj Ali, a native of Pokhari village in Latehar, launched a campaign against dowry in April last year. Following his footsteps, the community elders waged a war against dowry, a social evil plaguing the lives of thousands of families, especially the poor. The ‘maulvis’, too, resolved not to solemnise ‘nikah’ where any exchange of dowry was involved.

“The success of our campaign against dowry is astounding. So far, over 800 grooms’ families in Latehar and Palamu districts have returned Rs 6 crore in cash to the brides’ families. More importantly, the marriages are now being solemnised without any exchange of money,” said Ali, who was busy preparing for a massive community meeting at Daltonganj on March 7.

how is this a good news?

I dont feel good at all reading it.

Not the dying part gb:p:

The news that people are coming out and talking about giving the right to inheritance to daughters.

That is the way it should be.

Women should fight for their rights to be part of their parents life too...be able to take care of them like sons and also get right to inheritance instead of dowry.

Andhra Pradesh plans hi-tech war on mosquitoes

NEW DELHI: A hi-tech war against mosquitoes is being proposed using optical sensors to capture their density, species and gender before moving in to exterminate them.

Three cities in Andhra Pradesh — Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam and Tirupati — want to use modern technology to detect mosquito breeding before malaria and other vector-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and zika become an epidemic.

The Andhra government has sent a 'Smart Mosquito Density System' proposal to the Union urban development ministry for approval and to provide funds so that the three municipal bodies can implement this first-of-its-kind project in the country.

The three municipalities plan to deploy 10 sensors per sq km. The entire system will require nearly Rs 4 crore.

They are now.But very few follow it,or they  have to fight in court if they don 't get.

Before that...they (women) also have to show responsibility towards the birth family (parents) as required by law.(children have to take care of parents) .

Can't just take and not give.

For this her husband's family has to understand that she has responsibility towards her parents just like husband has responsibility towards his parents.

Also the stupid dowry has to stop ,including the life long gifting at every festival or milestone.Everyone waits for the inheritance .period.

They should simply use gene drives!

Lo and Behold!

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/bollywood/news/karan-johar-is-dad-to-twins-via-a-surrogate/articleshow/57471741.cms

MUMBAI: Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has become the single parent of twins — a girl and a boy— born through surrogacy last month.

The director-producer wasn't in the city to confirm the news, but civic officials said the births were registered with its public health department on Friday.

"The birth registrations were done on Friday," BMC executive health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar said. TOI confirmed this from the central government website for birth and death registrations. The twins were born at Masrani Hospital in Andheri (West) on February 7. However, Johar hasn't yet informed the BMC about the names of his children. A high-ranking BMC official said the children were registered in their birth record as a "baby girl" and "baby boy". Johar's close friend actor Shah Rukh Khan's third baby, AbRam, too, was born in the same hospital to a surrogate mother.

Civic officials said the birth registration details listed Johar as the children's father, but there is no mention of the mother's name.
