That's phenomenal in this age of flat pitches and small grounds where scores of 350 are considered chaseable.

But Shami has last played an ODI over two years ago and has been out of international cricket for a while. He will need to do really well in rest of IPL to prove the selectors he is fit and back in form for international cricket. Otherwise, better to go with a youngster.

To prove he has to be in the playing XI first

Kohli finally revealing his true colors..

Guys, its just a news shared by media. And we all know how media presents half baked news these days. Let's not be judgemental right now until any confirmed information is released by internal sources. This difference in opinions of captain and selectors, if true, should have been within them, not leaked to public. Even if Shami is selected, and the information turns out to b true, it will ruin the relationship between the captain n Shami.

Yh to be honest fitness is only concern with him but he is anyday better than Nehra, if he is not fit then yes a youngster should be picked maybe Shardul Thakur.

Or may be Thampi, though he always turns expensive somehow despite bowling well. Will be interesting though to see what he does in English conditions.

Absolutely. Its depressing watching the same old recycled team in another international tournament and its not as if they have been playing well either - overly dependent on Kohli to always score big.

So many younger and hungrier players have not been given a chance, instead it looks like Ind will have oldest squad in the competition

Reminds me of England team in WC 99... with Fairbrother, Mark Elham, Gough etc. the average age of the team was 30+.

I said Shardul because he been picked in the test squad a few times a never got his chance, Thampi could be a good choice but i think he needs a bit more time.

This is what happens when you don't have proper plans. We could have used all the meaningless bilaters to develop new players. Instead, we are stuck with old horses for major tournaments.

What surprises most is that everywhere, everyone is confident Ashwin and Jadeja have to be the 2 frontline spinners. That was the biggest fault of not trying other spinners enough in ODIs earlier. Ashwin bowling on and outside leg stump line for last 5 yrs in ODIs, never looks to attack, still the selectors and fans are so satisfied with him and went on playing him.

Chahal, mishra kuldeep, nadeem, axar... any of these 5 would be much better than Ashwin. Just compare Mishra's ODI stats with Ashwin's. Ashwin looks mediocre ODI spinner with an average of 32 and 4.9 rpo.

Only kuldeep overall has the potential .

The problem with others you have listed is that we cannot play them in all formats  it will always be difficult to play them ahead of both Jadeja who are world class in 2 formats and decent in other , Chahal is very good for shorter formats and hes been picked for that . I have been a mishra fan , but hes a Dinesh Karthik of spin bowling , chokes at international level .

Nadeem and Axar are no better than Jadeja .

2014 T20 world cup, 2015 world cup and 2016 T20 world cup, we had similar teams and we utterly failed in all three of them. Guess what we are again going with the same set of players for 2017 CT as well.

That's the biggest change we need to do. We dont need same spinners in all formats. Lets have different sets of spinners in different formats. All countries do that. Yasir Shah, Lyon, Herath, Bishoo are reserved only for test matches... Zampa, Tahir, Badree are reserved for shorter formats.

So Ashwin and Jadeja should only be playing test matches. Jadeja's ODI average of 35 doesnt justify his role as frontline spinner. Mishra is a poor spinner in test matches, should never play test, but in ODIs, he is the best. Bro, he averages 23 in ODIs with economy too well below Ashwin's. That can't be the stats of a bowler who falters in international cricket..

Test matches: Ashwin and Jadeja

ODIs + T20Is: Mishra/Chahal/Kuldeep/Axar/Nadeem.

Axar might not b better than Jadeja, but wont be worse too. And batting or Axar is way better than Jadeja's. Nadeem is definitely a lot better than Jadeja. In fact, nadeem might be the best of the lot. Just needs an opportunity to prove.

We didn't utterly fail in 2016 world t20. It was actually an unbeatable West Indies side and two no balls from us why we couldn't win the tournament.

2015 WC was not bad either. Reaching semi final in Australia, getting oppositions all out in all the matches, beating S. Africa and Pakistan was not utter failure.

In both these tournaments, deserving teams only won.

Final, semi final, semi final - utter failure. Guess we have WI of 70s and Aus of 2000s combined playing for us for this to be justified.
