2 out of top 3 teams in ODI ranking will be knocked out of CT by tomorrow

Australia, current world champion,  have failed to reach semi final of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and after India v South Africa match tomorrow, the losing side will be knocked out of the tournament. It's interesting since these teams among top 3 teams in the world.

 

England have played like a top side and have completely dominated other teams. Australia was unlucky with weather as their matches against NZ and Bangladesh were washed out and they lost badly against England today.

 

South Africa and India find themselves in do or die situation tomorrow when they face each other in virtual quarter final. Winning team will go to semis and losing team will be knocked out of the tournament. Only scenario in which both teams can make into semis is if both Ind-SA and Pak-SL matches are washed out whch is highly unlikely.

 

South Africe were demolished by Pakistani pacers while India were stunned by batting brilliance of Sri Lankan team which has made their group very interesting. Uncertain nature of game of cricket has played massive part in determining this interesting situation of this group where similar nature of weather dampened the Australian campaign.

 

Do you think these are good results for this tournament or you feel that teams were unlucky?

India and SA have no excuse to fall behind. They were complacent and paid price for it, never underestimate your opponent regardless of how weak they are and maintain same intensity throughout the tournament.

Champions Trophy has always produced tricky results and not always the best team has won.

 

it is a very short tournament, so consistency in short term is rewarded, which is why WC scores high as teams that win consistently over a period of time, goes on to win tournament

Underdogs have done well in CT. NZ won in 2000, WI won in Eng once, etc. SFs too tend to be not among the top 4 in the respective tourneys 

 

SA, which tends to choke in pressure games, won it in 1998

Very meaningful. It highlights how consistent teams are in their wins, unlike scoring fluke wins once in a while against top sides.

 

Skillwise, Aus, SA, Eng and India are the top sides which is what the rankings say and they have been faintly consistent.

Indian defeat by Srilankans is very similar to our defeat against Bangladesh in 2007WC

 

our team was overconfident

their team had too many hotshot newcomers - whose potential we had no idea about

 

players like Gunathilaka, Perera are not exactly in Mahela or Kumar.. they definitely have weaknesses. its just that our guys did not do enough homework thinking that we will blow them away... 

 

when gunathilaka was hitting fours, I remembered Tamim's assault during the 2007 WC

Actually the defeat was very similar to the SF of last year's WT20, where our bowlers were shockingly poor and our batsmen underestimated and put up a decent, not safe score on the board.

Yup, the only time we play modern attacking cricket is when chasing a big score.

And it is a problem that teams have identified. Most teams let us bat first as they know how well we approach batting first.

yes meaning ful when India is on top for few years, not meaningful for the few seconds ? Pak was on top in tests. yeah.

that too...

our batting was reminiscent of the Wt20 performance as you say

but we were aware of their hitters in Simmons and co when they came out to bat and our guys were very wary of the danger

I was talking about our bowling against their fledgling hitters who we thought were babies but actually did have sharp beaks and talons.

it reminded me of Tamim's hitting during the match I referred to... we had no idea who that bloke was.

Just wait. Both Ind v SA and Pak v SL will washed out / end in a tie, resulting both Ind and SA to get qualified for semis..
