we need a bit of luck and things going our way . its not unimaginable .

Who said it was impossible? Harping  on the same point I have made based on facts on hand it is going to be a huge uphill task that doesn’t mean it cannot happen.

As you yourself said we need “a bit of luck”....that statement itself means there isnt any quantifiable evidence to say we will win hands down.

Also our fast bowling is good and better as a unit than previous tours...however on SC,spinners do the bulk of work and they are the ones winning us series...only improvement has been that in those games fast bowlers have provided better support than they have done in the past....another problem is our fast bowlers seem

to run out of steam if they have to carry the bulk of the responsibiliies especially in the 2nd innings.

No it is not better, 2010 our bowling attack was very good with Zak, Sreesanth and Ishant.Bhajji was very good in last two tests. The only problem was they were playing their best team and Kallis played like superman.

I still see the same problem with our pacers, they will run out of steam and it will be hard for them to maintain intensity for whole series.

Pretty simple for me - We need to be at our best in all department especially slip catching in order to win the series in SA. Even if we fall back in one department then no amount of luck can save us.

Last tour our batting was pretty solid with Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane all scoring runs. But our bowling was good only in patches and slip catching was pretty average. So we need to keep up atleast the same batting performance and have a huge improvement with our bowling and catching from last tour in order to change the results this time.

Injured Zak had a backup in the form of Unadkut.

Current team has Yadav and Bumrah.

Sreeshanth was erratic performer...yes he came good in that series but he would blow hot and cold

Zak was the only consistent performer.

Today we have Bhuvi and Shami both capable of being consistent and not leaking runs  even when things are not working out.

Ishant of 2017>>>>Ishant of 2010

Who were Bhajji’s back ups-You are saying a combo of Ash and Jadeja is not good enough to match Bhajji?

We have an added bonus of an allrounder who can bowl 140ks too

how is this not a more complete attack than in 2010?

Any person who expects this catching unit to win a series in SA needs to have his/her head examined. With this level of catching and team selection 0-2 or 0-3.

I have a feeling we will get smacked hard 0-3 in SA because of our own stupidity (poor preparation, abysmal catching, Bunty bhai's team selection etc) but will get our act together before UK and win the 5 match series there. The good thing for UK is that we have a lot of prep time (unless BCCI mofos schedule another series immediately after IPL) and we play ODIs/T20s before the tests. Remember how we batted in the ODIs in 2013 in SA, that is what happens with zero prep and that is what we are going to see in SA. Expect a sub 100 score in the 1st test and by the time we get acclimatized the series will be over.

that is why we need a 4th seamer like Pandya who can give main seamers a break and he is not a bad bowler by any means.

Ishant of 2010 was awful. He was struggling pig time with his action and was down in pace due to that.

Who cares about back ups, we are talking about playing eleven. They had Umesh Yadav then also but they choose to debut great Jaydev.

When Ashwin or Jadeja will take 4/10 on green track I will change my opinion on them. As of now Bhajji is one of few indian spinners who have played a vital role in India winning overseas tests both in SA and NZ. Not many Indian spinners can claim it.

You don't know Ishant of 2017 is greater than 2011 as evidenced in this innings where he was too short.

They had Sachin and Sehwag who could bowl handy but don't know why Sehwag was never used then.

He was a chucker, would rather have us lose than chuck our way to glory.

I have no idea who pandya is yet.I still flabbergasted that he did not play at least one test in this series. He should have played test series and rested like Kohli in odis.

Selectors are jokers what is point in selecting both Bumrah and Pandya if they don't have any recent red ball cricket under them.

They should have played Bumrah and Pandya in this test.

We are expecting to win the series with dhawan,Rohit, out of form rahane.  I will also include Ashwin batting here which is just awful at the moment.

Pandya against pace does not provide any confidence.  So basically it leaves too much on Vijay, pujara, and Kohli.  Bowling will be no doubt good but slip catching is going to ruin it for india. I am sure kl will warm the benches only.

thats a serious allegation whats your evidence ?. unless you are from pakistan you need to provide evidence to back up your accusation, pak excused cause the laws are different in case of pakistan( they need solid proof which usually comes from their arse)

Dhawan/Rohit will score as everyone expects them not to, Jad will start in place of Ashwin. Pandya will enjoy the pitches there, it suits his style of bowling. Batting looks very strong, pace bowling looks stronger, slip catches will have to be held better thats one area i am sure Indian team will look to rectify rather quickly.

i am not sure how they will improve slip catching. They think slip fielding is like any other fielding position.  Slip fielding is a specialized position and needs proper technique, concentration and quick reflexes.  Kohli is too fidgety and can never be a good slip catcher. Vijay, Pujara and Rahane should stand work on their slip catching.

I don't think Bhajji was a great exponent of Doosra like Pakistanis or Murali.People underestimate how good a bowler he was and how feisty character he was and the fighting spirit he brought to table.

Even shastri uncle thinks same.
