Will Ashwin's Increase In Speed Improve His Effectiveness On Placid Pitches?

Been watching the game today. After 2 lacklustre overs, this is just fascinating bowling by Ash.

He seems to be bowling faster than Jaddu (can someone confirm?) and mixing it up with slow deliveries with overspin. 80-95 kmph. Got a couple to properly turn off the pitch. Troubled Mathews and Chandimal a couple of times.

Ever since he has increased his speed, he has been looking more threatening on placid pitches. Got 8 wickets in the last game too (aided by some poor Lankan batting of course).

He has an issue with consistency of penetration in the past on flatter tracks but if he can maintain this type of bowling, runs will dry up and wickets will come overseas.

What do you guys reckon?

No...he will be torn apart in SA. Can be handy in Eng though next year bcoz we will be touring in late summer when pitch assist spinners. But he has very little chance of being successful in SA or Aust

I think none of us really know how he's going to fare.  There's no real basis for either writing him off, or claiming that he will be effective.

High quality bowling today.

Surprised how sparingly he was used today.

Kohli can't think out of box, for him if righties are at crease (Matthews and Chandimal) then offspinner will not be effective, so kept persisting with Jadeja until he ran out of options. If there were lefties at the crease then Jaddu would not have been bowled much.

Yeah...he has a certain logic (sometimes this...sometimes something else) and he keeps persisting with it. I remember him ignoring Jaddu for a long time in Bangalore 2017 who then ended up taking a 6 fer in the end.

Problem with ashwin is he simply cant turn the ball on non-subcontinent pitches. As the ball wont turn batsmen starts attacking him and ashwin turns complete defensive mode. When ashwin tries defensuve bowling he is as good as a club bowler.

Look at lion. Its the turn he gets that makes him dangerous.

@sensible-indian Your take on Ashwin's bowling this innings? I don't think he should play ahead of Jadeja in the 1st test in SA.

Poor performance.

Bowled the flatter deliveries slower,  used more side spin than over spin and was bowling in good areas only in patches.

Inconsistent bowling.

Nothing like his performance in first innings.  Yes the pitch was flat,  slow and easy but the bowling wasn't great for most part.

If he bowls well,  he may do well overseas but with this performance he has shot himself in the foot. Only has himself to blame.

Lets see in SA warm up game but right now,  Jaddu deserves it way more than Ash.
