The right lessons to take from this series

Recommended Posts

1.) We need to develop some kind of sportsmanship culture in our country to win test series away from home. We have more talent than any other country but what we lack is the attitude to approach the game. The captain player relationship reminds me of bureaucracy in government jobs where subordinates are scared of seniors, this should be replaced with a healthier relationship and transparent communication where players honestly voice any of their opinions/insecurities to their captain.

Unlike LOIs, where a horses for courses strategy works well, Test cricket is more like portfolio management

You pick both Pujara and Rahane for example as a portfolio where Pujara scores big in Asia and Rahane in what we term "overseas"

One of the reasons why Ind's batting did really well relatively under the Famous 5 was that they worked like a portfolio. Sehwag could murder attacks on his day and get those Everest like big scores, Dravid would be consistent in almost all type of conditions and Tendulkar would get his 100s. Dada would be there to take on the spinners later on or play a gritty knock here and there. Laxman, who averaged relatively less than Sehwag, Dravid and Tendulkar, would play those exceptional knocks when chips are down

Bowlers you would play based on current form and conditions

Right now there is too much influence of LOIs on Tests  .... We are probably picking 11s trying to keep the core of LOIs and pick other players around the LOI core (probably explains why Rahane isn't playing) rather than the other way

I think the lesson is for us, the ICFers -

1) Stop expecting these clowns to do well overseas, and get a life for ourselves.

2) Kohli is not going to be bothered one bit by the loss. He will still force his crazy strategies on the team. We'll still have careless runouts like Pandya's, easy slip catches and wicketkeeper catches put down..

3) Two months later, IPL will come and everything else will be forgotten.
