Ganguly is the one who turned the meek cowards of the 90s  into fighting warriors after the fixing saga, the way he took our cricket from a minnow level to one of the best teams in the world and the way he injected and backed young players is one of the major reason why we are one of the top teams in the world today.  Ganguly is well ahead of kumble for me

Yes, that makes Ganguly a better captain. Kumble himself wasn't pushover as captain either.

 

However as a player there is big gap between Ganguly the batsman in test and Kumble the bowler. Can't recall many matches Ganguly won for India. Kumble on the other hand was one of biggest match winner for India.

 

ODIs - Ganguly was much better.

And that's why overall ganguly was better, and ganguly the test player was no pushover either, his average outside asia is very close to sangakara. Ganguly contributed more to Indian cricket than kumble.

Vengsarkar was my most favorite batsman of the 1980s. There was a period where he scored 1697 runs in 16 tests against all the teams. Azharuddin, Ganguly, Vengsarkar were all good in their own way. Vengy is just my personal favorite.
