zen
If we were to select an ATG Ind 11 from retired players, the top 5 are likely to be: Gavaskar Sehwag Dravid Tendulkar Laxman Of the top 5, 4 played most of their cricket together in the 1995 to 2012 period. Theoretically, Ind ATG 11 is likely to play ATG 11 of other teams, which would include their best bowling attack. When we look at performance of these 4 vs strong attacks, their numbers (apart from Sehwag's) are relatively poor: Against Aus with both McGrath and Warne, an example of a strong attack with variety, playing: View overall figures [change view] Primary team India Opposition team Australia Involving all of the players GD McGrath (AUS) or SK Warne (AUS) Qualifications runs scored greater than or equal to 200 Ordered by batting average (descending) Page 1 of 1 Showing 1 - 6 of 6 First Previous Next Last Return to query menu Cleared query menu Overall figures Player Span Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s V Sehwag 2004-2004 3 6 1 286 155 57.20 409 69.92 1 1 1 42 0 VVS Laxman 1999-2004 9 17 0 777 281 45.70 1272 61.08 2 3 1 125 0 SR Tendulkar 1999-2004 7 14 0 592 126 42.28 1067 55.48 2 4 1 76 3 R Dravid 1999-2004 9 17 0 540 180 31.76 1597 33.81 1 2 2 62 1 S Ramesh 1999-2001 5 10 1 222 61 24.66 475 46.73 0 1 1 25 0 SC Ganguly 1999-2004 8 15 0 342 60 22.80 750 45.60 0 1 0 43 0 Against Srilanka when played Murali: View overall figures [change view] Primary team India Opposition team Sri Lanka Involving the player M Muralitharan (ICC/SL) Qualifications runs scored greater than or equal to 200 Ordered by batting average (descending) Page 1 of 1 Showing 1 - 16 of 16 First Previous Next Last Return to query menu Cleared query menu Overall figures Player Span Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s M Azharuddin 1993-1997 9 9 1 728 152 91.00 1387 52.48 4 3 0 79 2 NS Sidhu 1993-1997 9 9 0 671 131 74.55 1537 43.65 3 2 0 73 16 V Sehwag 2005-2010 9 15 1 1031 293 73.64 1032 99.90 4 2 1 150 15 VG Kambli 1993-1994 5 4 0 264 120 66.00 479 55.11 1 2 0 34 4 MS Dhoni 2005-2010 7 10 2 400 110 50.00 579 69.08 2 1 0 38 9 SR Tendulkar 1993-2010 19 26 1 1216 143 48.64 2371 51.28 5 4 0 153 4 R Dravid 1997-2010 16 26 1 1190 177 47.60 2621 45.40 2 7 0 137 4 Yuvraj Singh 2005-2010 6 9 1 367 77* 45.87 576 63.71 0 5 2 51 4 VVS Laxman 2005-2010 10 17 2 676 104 45.06 1455 46.46 1 7 1 72 0 G Gambhir 2005-2010 9 16 0 648 167 40.50 1147 56.49 2 3 2 75 0 IK Pathan 2005-2005 3 5 0 202 93 40.40 347 58.21 0 2 2 26 2 SC Ganguly 1997-2008 12 20 1 746 147 39.26 1696 43.98 2 2 2 89 7 Against SA with either Donald or Pollock or both leading the attack: View overall figures [change view] Primary team India Opposition team South Africa Involving any of the players AA Donald (SA) or SM Pollock (SA) Qualifications runs scored greater than or equal to 200 Ordered by batting average (descending) Page 1 of 1 Showing 1 - 9 of 9 First Previous Next Last Return to query menu Cleared query menu Overall figures Player Span Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s V Sehwag 2001-2007 7 12 0 500 164 41.66 722 69.25 2 1 1 78 5 N Kapil Dev 1992-1993 4 5 0 202 129 40.40 309 65.37 1 0 0 24 2 SR Tendulkar 1992-2007 18 33 2 1105 169 35.64 2259 48.91 3 4 2 166 5 R Dravid 1996-2007 14 27 2 891 148 35.64 2559 34.81 1 4 0 116 0 M Azharuddin 1992-2000 10 18 0 611 115 33.94 841 72.65 3 2 0 86 5 VVS Laxman 1996-2007 12 20 3 510 89 30.00 1194 42.71 0 4 1 67 1 SC Ganguly 1996-2007 13 24 2 656 73 29.81 1212 54.12 0 5 3 93 5 W Jaffer 2000-2007 5 10 0 231 116 23.10 575 40.17 1 0 0 35 0 A Kumble 1992-2007 18 30 4 429 88 16.50 1179 36.38 0 1 3 51 1 Our bowling attack (apart from the spinners) is not among the top 3 ATG attacks. Therefore, Ind's ATG 11 is not likely to be among the top 3 ATG sides. We had many of our ATG playing at the same time (Fab 4, Kumble and Srinath) but we did not dominate as much as we would have liked .... express bowling
52 minutes ago, Global.Baba said: How is Kapil or Shami even a debate? Kapil all the way. Since it is a No.9 slot, it is a pure bowler's slot. And that 11 is only for tests in Asia. In tests in Asia ... Shami averages 23 with a SR of 45 Kapil averages 29 with a SR of 60 Moreover, these days, pace bowling in Asia is primarily about reverse swing, and Shami is a much better exponent of that. So, I should probably remove Kapil altogether for the tests in Asia. Link to comment

I included Lara because the "intent" of this thread was pretty clear . Not sure why you added that wall of text again when I have already shown Tendulkar having a better stats than Lara against all of these ATG pairs in live Tests. And you might want to check England's record during Lara's career. They were certainly not a top 3 side for the best part. India and Pakistan were both better in terms of W/L ratio from 90-06. But you are welcome to post the same wall of text with your trademark dubious filters in response to this comment . Laaloo 1 Link to comment

I see that you're back with the Avg*SR nonsense. Tomorrow you'd tell me Azhar was better than Steve Waugh because he had a higher Avg*SR. Link to comment
