You are talking about an old Dhoni who plays calculated cricket with least risks. When he was about Pant's age he was easily maintaining strike rate of 100 throughout the innings like his 148. Karthik is another guy who can strike from ball one. Raina used to be one. None of them lose shape, lose balance, mistime as much as Pant does. Look at Pandya now. He rarely gets out of position when he executes his shots. Problem is Pant is trying to muscle the ball rather than time. Good thing is he can play normal cricket and score runs without being over-aggressive. It might be slow. But he can survive and score runs albeit slightly at a slower rate like KL Rahul does now. Rightnow too many heeve hos regardless of line and length

He needs time before he can hit. Dhoni too used to heave a lot early. Difference is Pant is younger so he thinks he needs to hit with more power to clear boundaries that's where mistimes. He will have to realize that he has enough natural power to hit the ball, just needs to time it and not break the ball. There hasn't been many better 21 year old hitters than pant.
