Surely the super cash rich BCCI can reduce the tickets to half so that the fan participation can be drastically increased. Aus can try new venues like manuka oval in Canberra and Darwin but why do they keep the usual venues. They have built a tradition around boxing day test in MCG and the day after new year's test in SCG. They also start their season at the Gabba and hold an ODI in Adelaide to commemorate their republic day. In India, its not just tradition but viewership. The last test in Chennai was 3 years ago against England. If you dilute the usual test centres, people will lose interest in the traditional cities. And with new venues not bringing the crowd will result in double whammy kirkutfan and Gollum 2

Test cricket as a spectator sport is not popular in smaller cities. Ranchi as a test venue must be questioned after this series. Ranchi grew in popularity because of MSD and held its first test in 2017. It has still not attracted crowds. It is pretty good as a LOI venue. Same with Mohali even though Mohali has a longer history of hosting matches. We have it backwards. Hold LOI matches in smaller cities and tests in major centres Gollum 1
zen Posted October 29, 2019 Posted October 29, 2019 If there are to be 5 venues, I would like to add scenic locations (relatively) to the crowd factor: North: Dharamshala (Delhi is polluted) East: Kolkatta South: Chennai West: Mumbai Wildcard/Rotation: Can be from A'bad, B'lore, Delhi, Hy'bad, etc. Kolkatta and Mumbai are the main test venues in India.

Abad, Nagpur, Dharmsala, Hyderabad and others should be on rotation.
ShoonyaSifar Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 Once the A'bad stadium is ready, it will hog lion's share of matches and will become a permanent fixture on our int'l calendar for both Tests and ODIs. Could be ideal for any D/N tests given the dry weather there.

Also Delhi and Chennai, former is our fortress (last 30+ years) while latter has too rich a tradition to ignore, plus the history associated with that ground starting from India's 1st test victory. Kolkata the test venue is our number 1, Mumbai will be below the other 2 IMO. Real McCoy 1
Gollum Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 @Real McCoy I attended the 2001 Eden test, albeit missed the most important part of that test. GOAT win, most of the other matches I attended there ended in heartbreak for our side. Real McCoy 1

It takes you back to the 90s with pathetic facilities, no working toilets, shoddy arrangements for food and water, crowd mismanagement, parking 2 KMs away from the stadium and garbage everywhere near the entry gates. Last Test I watched was in 2015 vs SA, the seats were not even properly cleaned, bird droppings everywhere with a terrible stench. Stopped going afterwards. Real McCoy 1

Kol and Mum rank among top test venues such as Lords, MCG, etc

New stadiums get built to replace old ones so I m not putting too much weight on the history of a stadium. Kol may get a new stadium but its reputation as a major cricket center will remain PS I would develop Dharamsala in the North ( relative pollution and stadium quality/aesthetic issues with Delhi) as it is a beautiful location (also considered the highest cricket ground in the world iirc so it has the potential to develop an aura) .... Kol in East, Chennai in South, and Mumbai in West .... Other venues can be rotated and/or take prominence if conditions change (new stadiums, development of test culture, branding/new reputation, etc.) Edited October 30, 2019 by zen
Cricketics Posted October 30, 2019 Posted October 30, 2019 A test match around India's holiday season which is Diwali has to be promoted well and should become a permanent fixture.

No denying that, followed by Bengaluru and then perhaps Delhi. But as test venues Wankhede and Brabourne never had the aura. Kolkata may get a new stadium, maybe better stadium with 150k capacity...while that might help local cricket scene Eden will always be numero uno there. Don't think we are disagreeing here, you are talking about cricket centres while I am talking about venues. Like how Moscow is the chess capital of the world but Linares (Spain) and Wijk Aan Zee (Netherlands) are the most prestigious tournament venues. zen 1

However more Indian fans would enter the stadium if test match to let prices are reduced by half. Worth a try ? Guess BCCI gets the major chunk from broadcast rights
