Although to be fair, he did not do that against the windies,OZ, SA,PAK - the best bowling attacks in the world cup. Jayasuriya and Kalu became famous because attack came from both ends. But Tendulkar batted like that even before 1996 world cup. Ever since he started opening in 1994 ODI in NZ, he always played that way. Use the field restriction overs and take it slow in the middle and explode at the death. Link to comment

vvvslaxman
Overall strike rate can be boosted even by attacking later. But when it comes to power play attack it is Srikkanth. He would take on the new ball bowler. There is no stat for first 10 over strike rate. Link to comment

Gilly made his debut much later than some of the guys, who were explosive and entertaining too, being discussed here. There was nothing new that Gilly brought to the table than pursuing a model already in use. I guess, you could be confusing pioneering with effectiveness Gilly was forceful in his playing style, Anwar etc were more wristy/classic type of players. Link to comment
Vijy
Ind should have had Kapil and Sunny open in mid-80s. As posted by Anoop K earlier, Sunny was a very solid ODI consolidator post-1985. Kapil was the only one who could have scored much faster than Srikkanth (I think his SR in 80s was 100+). and given the animosity between the two at times, they could have competed against each other and maybe raised their levels higher. Kapil is more dangerous down the order. Cheeka and Gavaskar complemented each other. In the benson & hedges Selfish Ravi bot played slowly for his 50s. Cheeka was the real man of the series with attacking cricket. Pitch was super friendly for bowling in that tournament. Every single batsman struggled. Richards averaged 21 in 4 matches. Srikkanth was the highest run getter of the series. He should have won the man of the series. Ravi bot picked some wickets so they gave it to him. Ravi bot's strike rate was 49. Actual tournament winners for India were Srikkanth and L Siva. Richie benaud's favorite player of the 80s was handsdown Srikkanth due to his dare devil approach regardless of the conditions. Especially he would play audacious shots on fast pacy perth pitch. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=590;type=tournament Edited February 1, 2020 by vvvslaxman Link to comment

First class
If I have to pick one batsman for being the pioneer of explosive batting in ODI, my choice would be SriKant. He was the first batsman I saw who was hitting the ball over the fielder regularly. I have seen some of his old videos as back as 1983 WC and also in 1985 B&H cup final in Australia when India beat Pakistan. Krish srikkanth smashed holland for 22 runs in one over at the Sydney Test. He reached his century in 97 balls. And also smashed Imran Khan for 16 runs in one over at Chennai Test. Sandeep Patil at the oval test smashed Bob willis for 6 fours. Then Kapil 4 sixes against Hemmings. But Srikkanth quiet often used to do that. Link to comment
