I have no doubt in my mind that had he been playing under these new ICC regulations and on these pattas, even 300 wouldn't be beyond him. Yeah surely would have been one of the top batsman with today's rules but then what about his bowling? wouldn't it be useless in this era? Think he would have converted himself into batsman. It is understood that being a high strike rate batsman implies that you are taking more risks, which means that you can get out too. The role that players like Jayasuriya play is to take the game away from the other team, utilize the power plays, and set it up for the team,. In SL's case, it would have relatively high average batsmen like Sangakkara too. While taking the attack to the opposition, these batsmen will play a few exceptional innings and also suffer a few failures. Averages can be like this: * High strike rate batsmen: 70 of 48, 30 of 24, and 5 of 6 = avg. of 35. * Someone else could have: 40 of 50, 30 of 40, and 80 of 100 to average 50 .... Or 40, 40, 20* = Avg of 50. Do you know who the man of the series was? It was Jayasuriya with an avg. of "only" 37 .... By starting such a thread, you are, in a way, inquiring - "Why is Jayasuriya MoS with an avg of 37 and only 221 runs, and not someone else who has more runs and/or average or whatever?". Why he is Man of the Series when so many others average so high (or low with the ball) is something you need to understand. And that will also answer you as to what segment he belongs to (Hint: he is not necessarily competing with those who avg high) and why people pick him .... As I said, do not quote me with such posts! Think he would have converted himself into batsman. He would have been a useful part timer, high IQ bowler. But as you said his batting would have become even more devastating, I guess 40 avg and 125 SR. ...Jason Roy on steroids with better spin playing ability. 5 hours ago, Nikola said: Ofcourse he was big time match winner but he was too inconsistent with bat as well. When you play 450 odd matches you will have many memorable innings to remember. What about his performance against top sides of his era? His great performance mostly came in Asian conditions. (Don't post his couple of overseas tons now, i am talking about consistency overall) Question is will you pick him in your world xi or asia xi & is he ATG for you? He was initially selected as a bowling all rounder, then more regarded for bowling. When he first came in the late 80s he would come in at #7 or #8, sometimes even lower. Only after 80-100 matches did the SL TM start using him as a top order batsman. Look at his stats from circa 1994 or '95. Likewise he carried on till too late, should have retired after the 2008 Asia Cup when he was already 39. Hence his overall stats have taken a beating, at his peak he wasn't 'too inconsistent' as you put it, for his high risk game he was pretty consistent. Of course Sanath or Viru are never going to have the consistency of Kohli or Rohit because of the way they approach the game, but in an all time XI which has plenty of great batsmen the idea is to maximize output during PP rather than going the Rohit way, because the MO won't be filled with Rayudus and Karthiks. Sanath won't be in my world XI because of Gilly, but in Asia XI I will have him partnering Sachin. Edited April 13, 2020 by Gollum
