Dal is arguably the pan-India food dish, with every region having its own variation.

Which is the best version of dal you've had?

Best I've had:

Dal tadka - Punjabi Dhaba style

Worst:

Gujarati style sweet dal :puke:

I find Makhani dishes in general go better with breads than rice. Not sure why, but they just do.

Cholar Dal with Luchi..Bengali combo...like the sweetness in the Dal+aroma of Dalchini

<daylight>

Dal Makhani with Basmati Rice or Lachha Paratha

Even Sambhar is a kind of dal, at least the Tamil version

Karnataka style dal - simple  Toor dal tadka of mustard and green chili, with rice served with fried dried chilies stuffed with salt (uppuMensinkayi) and freshly fried rice or tapioca sandige (vadagam) / crackers

Andhra Tomato Pappu - dal tadaka with tomato, green chilis  and ginger-garlic

North Indian style - Palak dal or Methi (greens) dal - super yummy We make a similar one with Dantu ( Amarnath leaves) - classic

Sambar Karnataka style lightly sweetened with jaggery

Dont like Naarth Indian style dal makhani, with 5 different types of dal

@Trichromatic  @Gollum why do Bongs and Gujjus add sugar in everything they eat?

Can't speak for Gujjus. Bongs don't add sugar in everything!!! Just this one dish, like how the Sambhar in Bengaluru is on the sweeter side.
