Team composition by player types and having adequate backups

Openers ----

1. Rohit / Mayank
2. Dhawan / Gill .... prefer Gill as first choice

 

In next 2 years -  Need one player whose primary job is to play aggressively - Try Shaw & Samson, KL

 

Looking at a player who can hit length deliveries /back up length deliveries on stumps and score runs . Also a good puller /cutter/Ramp shot player. 

Basically get runs against test match type bowling.  

Check if Pant  has it in him to play in this role  . Some out of the box thinking. 

 

Post Rohit /Dhawan era -

My  choices are Gill , KL ,Shaw 

Others to be tried -  Samson. Padikkal ,  .

 

Middle order ----

3. Kohli / Gill
4. Iyer / Pant .... prefer Pant as first choice

 

Add  Ruturaj /Padikkal  . Need to find a place as opener slot is too crowded and do not want to lose them . 

 

Batsman-keeper ----

5. Rahul / Pant

 

Add in Ishaan /Prab simran 

 

Batting all-rounders ----

6. Hardik
7. Jadeja / Sundar ?

 

Add in Abhishek Sharma 

 

Spinners ----

8. Chahal / Kuldeep .... wrist spinners preffered

 

   Add Chahar /Axar/Varun /Bishnoi 

 

   Believe all can make it from T20  to 50 overs as they are young . 

 

Fast bowlers ----

9. Bumrah
10. Shami / Saini

 

Add Mavi/ Prasidh /Thyagi /Akash /Koti

 

Swing bowler ----

11. Shardul / Bhuvi / Natarajan

This is a very iffy opening pair in ENG & NZ and to some extent in  AUS & SA . Should have atleast one opener who is a true opener and has good experience as opener in Domestic. .

My vote is to test Eashwaran. or even move Puji to open and bring Gill to #3.

 

 

I would love Pujara to open in SENA ... but will he ?

 

Rohit's off stump game has improved  ... so, Gill and Rohit may work in Australia and SA.

 

How is Easwaran against quick bowling and swing bowling ?

 

Any evidence that he can play either  ?

No choices but to test K Bharat & Ishan Kishan  (esp. if he succeeds in 50 overs - should be groomed upwards for test) .

 

Bharat seems to be the preferred backup now. But is his batting adequate against fast bowling ?  Can he be a No.6 batsman ?

 

Kishan maybe better.

currently for next one year with SA n ENG tour we need to look at one more. The chink in mayank n shaw game will be badly exploited in those 2 places

Mayank and Shaw can't be tried in SA and England.

 

Both need to work on their game.

 

Shaw will get over his issues if he works on them  ... not so sure about Mayank.

 

If anyone of Gill or Rohit are missing or injured, the safest option is Pujara as opener in England and SA.

yea or i dnt mind vihari also in england since he can grind it out, his short ball issues are there but its england

Not really. Vihari can play new bowl and he looked pretty compact in England last time. He will anyways not be part of first XI because Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Pant and Pandya(Jadeja if Pandya doesn't bowl) will be 3-7.

 

So, if one of the two opener gets injured, I will replace him with Vihari, no need to make multiple batting position changes.

I like this idea of Pujara opening in England and SA. With Jadeja proving to be a much capable batsman, we can probably play him and 4 seamers in these countries with Sundar performing a Moeen Ali type role

Washy at 21 > Jaddu at 21..  India have invested for a long time in Jadeja.  Nearly 8-9 years I guess.

1. In LOIs, who do you think can be good backups for Hardik and Jadeja as batting all-rounders ? Who should be developed with special care ?

 

2. Which quick bowler, apart from Bumrah, can bowl good yorkers and slower balls ? ( Not talking about medium pacers )

Not keen on this for long term , Guys like Jaddu, Axar, Sundar are better placed at 5,6 coz at 7 u need a bit of extra muscle to hit that old ball from ball 1 without even getting ur eye in or u need players like DK and Uthappa in his prime who can hit and play the field . 

Genuinly hoping Samad comes through n takes that spot till then we can try sundar, tewatia

shardul eco is worrying but i think there is a smart way to use him, observed something he is very handy on long grounds like Dubai, Abu dhabi or australian rather NZ ones. He bowls a heavy ball which often ends up being caught on long ground. Also useful on two pace wkts rather flat where he lacks skills
