I am seeing it for the first time here in the image you posted. This looks like a mix of many devices as you mentioned and much advance. It is not the typical old gramophone which we used to call which was very basic and had single functionality. That's why I got surprised that how come your gramophone lasted so long.

He studied in US so had a few from there too including soundtracks of 007 films

I vaguley remember my grandfather telling a 5yr old me something of the sort when I used to try and get close to his collection of vinyls. But it could also be to shoo me away.
