I dont think it's a given.  England are quite a resilient side - not a very dominant side maybe but they have won series in SA and SL and they usually do fairly well in India (2016 apart)

They will not play a third seemer at chennai with stokes in the team. Curran might make it into the pink ball match, maybe.

 

There is also certain Ollie pope who recovered from injury and back in the squad and he has higher FC pedigree than crawley/lawrence. I think it will be Burns-Sibley-Pope-Root-Lawrence-Stokes-Buttler in top 7 until Crawley recovers

Crawley didn't have a great couple of games in Sri Lanka but he's still coming off the back of a score of 267 in the test before that. Importantly he's also an opener/top order player unlike Lawrence who has no proper FC experience batting at 3. From the XI you've posted Crawley would have been in for Lawrence, Pope would've been in for Woakes/Curran and pushed up to 6, and I suspect quite possibly Bess in for Moeen. With Crawley now out they may be tempted to go for the extra seamer instead of him (especially if Stokes is a little dodgy on the bowling workload front) although I'd still go for Lawrence personally. Who they'll pick to bat at 3 is still a bit of a mystery (Lawrence, Root or maybe even Stokes?) but I reckon they'll go Lawrence. He'll need to put in a performance to ensure Bairstow doesn't instantly replace him in the 2nd test though.

Not sure why, but I get confused between Sibley and Bess.  Good news is that neither of them makes England a dominating side.

Everyone,  including some of the more experienced posters,  thought this would be a cakewalk because of home pitches and England supposedly being weak . They are a quality side and our best chance was to blunt that seam attack as it is their only real weakness.
