(1) Bill passed in legislature to lift the ban on yoga being taught in schools:  Who was even aware that teaching yoga was banned in public schools?  I sure was not.

(2) Hilariously enough, although #1 is true and they finally saw the absurdity of the ban, it comes with a stipulation:  You cannot do namaste during the yoga lessons.  The kids might get influenced and convert to Hinduism - oh, the horror!

(2) or use Sanskrit names for poses. I had seen a kids video on Yoga with pose names as - Tortoise pose, . Butterfly pose

Wait, you are now quoting someone who is quoting NYT?  ;-)

Nothing to be surprised ..It's a country based on Christian guiding principles right from the Puritans and Quakers.

Only church bells are allowed. No harm in that.

Call them any pose.

Chant home instead OM.

Enjoy !

Fear and insecurity drives everything.  Someone is going to steal my way, my people, my way of doing things.  Something else is challenging the way that my priest told me was the only way.  Can't let that happen, no?

American South is just a state of mind, not just Alabama similar line of thinking exists in other parts of their country as well. Then these folks will lecture Bharat about religious freedom, tolerance etc.

Just like my desi friends will complain about racism in the American South while simultaneously complaining about "those black kids" bringing down the "standard" of their Einstein Iyer's magnet school.  These ironies are everywhere.

Not sure if you are joking. Yoga derived from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras is ancient Indic/Hindu knowledge about integration of mind and body leading to realization of consciousness that drives both mind and body. Om (pranava) is one of the chants that resonates with the body and eventually recognizes that connection with nature (we all come from nature). It is used as a source of focus and concentration for the mind during the asana (pose).

IOW. There is a reason for Om in Yogasana, you will not attain the fruits of yoga without it. Otherwise don’t call it yoga, call it soulful-stretching like they do for Tai Chi, they called it Shadow-Boxing.

GI tag for a product indicates the source. What these modern day maharshis have done to Yoga is packaged it for western audience with some mumbo jumbo taking out the religious part of it , sold it devoid of the very nature it came from. Without any authority of power (like the Vatican or Mecca), all works from Sanatana Dharma has been misappropriated and consumed and digested into something and is made popular now without accreditation.

Asana is very loosely translated as Pose, that is a different story.

OM is OM if you believe in it . If it is the sound you want and the vibration...home makes the same sound. Besides ,home is as sacred .

With out the belief....yoga is still a good physical exercise system. What is the harm if people just want the physical benefits and not the belief.....

I am glad we don't have a vatican or mecca controlling our ' dharma' . Drarma should change with time and situations and needs of the people like fresh flowing water.

Let people enjoy what they want to use ,the way they want to use. As long as no one is getting harmed .

If the kids want to use OM when they grow up,they  can do that. They do live in a fairly free country.

Why should we get offended if people don't want to embrace all our beliefs and want to cherry pick what they want.

Most Indians in India do that too. Who follows Sanatan Dharma to the T ? Who wants to follow every nonsense in religion. Most Indians also cherry pick what they want and what is acceptable from Sanatan Dharma and thank God for that.Or else we would all be believing in the bullshit about certain  vibrations effecting only women and why women need to wear nosepins and toerings and all such nonsense.

Almost all religion as a whole are quite unacceptable by present times and it is only dilution that makes them palatable.

The syllables of om is as actually a.u.m , the freq it generates is different. This is the debate of trads vs raitas on SM. If you want to be contrarian and want to eat half-baked daal, be my guest.

I never said they shouldn’t. At least we should know the roots, if we don’t popularize them , the misappropriation leads to disappearance of our culture and traditions.

They did the same to pagans whose culture can only be seen in museums now. They had festivals like Christmas and Valentines which have been digested over years.  After a few 100 years. Patanjali will be unknown from Yoga and be a brand that Fake baba invented.

Sadguru claims Mahashivrathri has nothing to do with religion. Gits like him and Ramdev should not teach the world about Dharma.

The decentralization is the very essence that appeals to many and it teaches inclusion. But it was formed in times when there was no other modern religion, that are now predatory in nature. We need some institutions that safeguard our value systems and not let it be in the hands of those who have distorted it all along.

The real problem is after 200 years of McCaulay’s education and banning the Gurukuls, we have lost a lot of knowledge systems. We don’t know that Heliocentrism was believed in India much before EU. That mathematics was more advanced in India much before EU. It is not just 0 we invented but a decimal place value system when EU were writing numbers as XVLM.

I am not advocating to follow Dharma to a T, it teaches me to have modern Smritis but resonate the same Shruthi. At least we should learn what some of the true meaning of traditional knowledge systems instead of losing it. Who knows if we can broaden our modern thinking with some of their knowledge. Application is what dharma teaches.

I don’t pay attention to WAU forwards regarding nose rings. But like the fashion. Bindis and  jewelry are alankaras that appeals to all, looks good. Nothing wrong if somebody likes to wear it and don’t have to ridicule tham as purathana artifacts

Every one should have the right to decide if they want to wear it or not....without having to deal with the pressure from society or family .

I wear the nosepin because I like wearing it . Not because I will be looked down on for not wearing it.

I chose not to wear mangalsutra because I don't believe in it ...nor sindoor because most are toxic chemicals. Everyone should have that choice without the pressure or  pseudo science behind it.

Choice without pressure is what beliefs should be about.

Agree, all those justifications to make women wear , ghunghat, bangles, sindoor, Mangal sutra using stories and mythology or mumbo jumbo science should not be encouraged. This is how Burkha, hijabs have been forced on a billion women using religious dogma. They now look like postboxes now.

If it is by choice, why do some campaign misinformation like true meaning of bangles and mangalasutra is slavery and some BS like that. Somebody wants to wear it, let them

Why should the kids in Alabama have the responsibility of keeping our traditions and culture alive.

Let them learn Yoga without the belief like our kids enjoy Santa and the fun associated with it without the Christian beliefs.

We can only keep our culture and traditions alive by weeding out the unaccepatble parts from it.

There is no way we can tell our kids about something like castes with rosy justifications and excuses about why it was made or exists. There is no way we can expect the kids of 2021 to accept that .

We need to to stop the reverence given to cow excretory products in our pujas if we expect the kids to take beliefs seriously. We need to make it acceptable to them .

When we tell them about the good parts, we need to accept the warts too and  discard them .

Most of  us hindus do not argue with our elders or debate the wrongs in our culture and traditions because ,firstly,we don't argue with elders as it is  'disrespectful 'to the  elders and we don't want to hurt them because they raised us and 'sacrificed 'for us. We don't do that...we just become atheists , or just follow ' traditions' to keep them happy without believing in them....as long as they are alive.

The only way to keep culture and traditions alive is to change with times ....or keep it alive with force. Thankfully hindus do not have the religious institution that can force it down people throat.

@coffee_rules Can you point me to any rigorous evidence for the unique tangible, measurable benefits of chanting aum?  By unique benefits, I mean ones that cannot be obtained in other ways - like by listening to music?

Second, at what # specific Hz should one chant it to achieve optimal body resonance? - Answer added in edit:  432 Hz (Pitch A4)

Could we not chant/listen to anything at 432 Hz and achieve the same goal?  The way I see it, what is chanted and the frequency at which it is chanted are independent of each other.  One can chant AUM at any frequency, but resonance will not be achieved except at 432 Hz.  Conversely, one can chant anything else (e.g., musical notes) at 432 Hz and achieve resonance.  What am I missing?

@BacktoCricaddict It is bordering meta-physical and those into exploring consciousness in the scientific world. It is new age science that have seen advances in neuro-therapy, healing through meditation, breathing and etc

IOW, stuff that's still waiting for rigorous analysis.  Until there are some measurable parameters of "healing" that can be tested in well-controlled experiments, it is all conjecture.

Believe what you want , you believe that there are 7 steps for a Covid recommended med to work. It worked for some didn’t it? Ayurveda needs controlled trials to be legit, you guys speculate all such traditional science as placebo until then. Until it is subjected and promoted with scientific rigor. Every traditional science will be ridiculed.

You asked specifically about mind sciences, will forward a couple of papers which it is being considered with modern scientific tests
