zen Posted May 29, 2021 Author Posted May 29, 2021 (edited) I watched Nayakan, while it is better (though not a night and day difference) than Dayavan, which is almost a scene to scene remake iirc, it has the same rewatchability factor as Dayavan, which is relatively low (not sure if I will watch these two again. they may also have a dated feel to them) ... Dharmatma is better and more rewatchable for being grander whether it is style, locations, background score, songs, collection of good actors, the Feroz Khan factor, or so on, along with the adaption of the Godfather story, tweaking it nicely for the Bollywood masala genre! Vinod Khanna's probably left in ‘82 (so 2 yrs after Qurbani, which was released in 1980) to move to Rajneeshpuram in US. His first film post comeback (at least the one released) was probably Insaaf ... Vinod Khanna usually did well in multi starrers. His solo films were usually tripe ... In the 2 years period post Qurbani, he had minor multi starrer hits like Kudrat and Rajput. I doubt that he would have been able to compete with AB, but may have got a few good projects here and there On one hand, you had Amitabh, who was considered to be #1-10 from late 70s to mid 80s. Rishi Kapoor once said that AB was the biggest superstar he had worked with citing Coolie where mobs in huge #s would come to see him (Rishi had not seen anything like that). When AB was injured during Coolie’s shooting, the nation is said to have come to a standstill. AB had a unique power on the box office in that period. On the other hand, you had guys like Feroz Khan & Manoj Kumar, who would also draw huge crowds to the cinemas with their home productions Edited May 31, 2021 by zen

Songs and the two heroines are the saving grace. Cinematography and locales in Afghanistan are the highlights for me. Didn’t know Imtiaz Khan was Amjad’ Khan’s brother . Picked out the resemblance I concur. I started watching it yesterday. So Feroze Khan goes to Afghanistan. Why? By his own admission he does nothing there, roaming around in his Willys Jeep all day. In Godfather, Mike runs away to Sicily after killing Sollozzo and the dirty cop. Here, it's understandable Feroze goes away to Afghanistan to be far away from his father and his illegal deeds, which he opposes strongly. Fine. But, in what capacity did he go to Afghanistan? At-least show him as working there as an engineer or project supervisor or a humanitarian doctor or something! If he is just sitting idle, that means he is using his dad's money, which is dirty. So big, fundamental plot hole there. Feroze Khan obviously loved his ancestral homeland being a Pathan himself and did some great work in showing the locales, music, authentic slice of local life etc but forgot to add a valid plot-wise reason for him to go there. When he comes for his sister's wedding, he dresses like a mafioso and steps on to the Mandap with shoes on! Learn some manners, man! Hema Malini looks odd with that wig and bad make up which shows different skin complexion for face and arms. Rekha looks okay. Premnath is good, looking the part. Dara is obviously Luca Brasi and looks impressively menacing. The villains - Jeevan and his brother look cartoonish. Their offspring are better in the menace scale. So far I have watched about 3/4th of the movie, with the old man gone. Have been fighting an urge to stop watching since the 50 minute mark. Should I just give up on watching now or is there some redeeming feature in the last 40 minutes or so?
