Mirabai Chanu failed 5 of her 6 lifts in Rio. Snatch was 82 kg, clean and jerk failed to lift 103 kg.

This time snatch 87 kg, clean and jerk 115 kg......easy silver.

Abhinav Bindra struck gold only in his 3rd Olympics, made the final in Athens but cleared that final hurdle in Beijing with a final shot of 10.8 under immense pressure. Saurabh (10m air pistol) at the age of 19 looked a million bucks 3 out of 4 times he shot in the range, his time will come.

Not the end of the world for other athletes, take inspiration from the Manipuri girl and our only individual gold medalist, come back stronger in 3 years time. Hope this experience makes them stronger.....obviously doesn't apply to the mentally weak archers but for many of our Olympians there is potential.

Actually even the archers will do well if given the right mental conditioning coaching. These same archers shoot 10s consistently at other global competitions but have a psychological barrier at the topmost level. They are all super capable (making it to Olympics QFs is an achievement for an Indian athlete), need slight tweaks to their training and competition routine

No one forced you to watch. Tell me what funding they provided for indian athletes?

Do we have indian institute of sports for athletes?

Do we offer incentives  ?

Do we have infrastructure for other sports?

Only sport we choked was rifle shooting.

i look at a guy like Hardik Pandya and then suddenly appreciate these athletes even more when they qualify leave alone getting knocked out in Qf or pre Qf

One look at the Japanese guy and Atanu and you knew who had it under control all the while

Absolutely agree with your thoughts.

I have grudges with few sports ( like archery ) or few athletes ( like Seema Punia ) which are not good enough for decades but still participate in Olympics. Why can't young people be groomed for 4 years?? If the new talent are not good enough for Olympic so be it...but don't send a old Punia type athlete or an aging type Archery team ( with fake No.1 ranking hype ) when they have achieved zilch at world stage over a long period of 12 years.

I am all for young people...Saurabh in shooting is prodigy....even Manu is good....we need to persist with such talent for sure.

I was also delighted for our fencing girl. Such a breath of fresh air and eager to embrace new sports and going for a win even against No. 3 french woman.

When people mention the name punia. All I can think of is pavithra punia. Not that I find her hot or anything.

We keep saying that Indians only care for Cricket but faxt is it is the only sport at world level in which we have excelled.

Despite so much of money being poured in other sports there are no results.

Which Indian kid would like to see Boxing of Amit Panghal and would like to be like him ?

Not so true  The total non-cricket expenditure across all sports put together since the last Olympics will not even be half of the money BCCI spends on a season of IPL. The spends have definitely gone up, and that shows up in number of athletes who qualify now for Olympics and are moving beyond the first rounds but lot more needs to be done at the grassroots level.

But I will not blame cricket for other sports lagging behind. Despite it's shortcomings, BCCI is the most professionally run sports body in the country.

tbf Atanu etc relatively did as well as our cricket team has recently and they make and get  half the hype. Dhoni did zilch in his last few years and people tweet about him every other day and neither was his gameplay exciting to watch.

Atanu I don't think is even in top 10 archers in the world. He did well to reach QF.

I don't think Indians will watch Cricket if we are not in top 6 teams for some time.

I think their time is over...talking about the batch which has been representing us for over a decade now. Mental conditioning must start from a much younger age, focus on mental aspect should be a habit instead of once in 4 years program. Hope we invest more smartly when it comes to next gen of archers.

There has been enough money spent on sports supporting their education, giving them good jobs, foreign coaches, training in foreign acedamies in last last decade.

You can't hide behind the lack of support from govt excuse for so long.

Many of them are content with a govt job and are happy to be what they are.

Seema punia is a Commonwealth champ and came in 6th in discus last time at Rio. She is obviously not at her peak atm but let's not deride our athletes

Looks like it is going to be a sobering day today. Hoping against hope for Sindhu.

Also hope the hockey women's team gets it done vs South Africa. Not much else to look forward to. Amit crashing out was a huge downer

Bhai Hardik on his day can win games single handedly against any opposition. Can smash best bowlers in the world.

There is no comparison in terms of talent wise where Hardik stands and where these guys are in their sport.

Let's see some facts. How much money spent and what kind of 'good' jobs have been given

Funny to see people comparing cricket players with these atheletes in Olympics. Saloh itni budhi na lagao. :)

Too much vella time.  You can’t compare athelets across diff sports ubless there are legends like Federer or Tendulkar etc.

Yes, Seema Punia made us proud at commonwealth level and we all appreciate that.

But her time was up with that peak at Rio (6th place).

She is now 38 year old and virtually no chance. Why is money being spend on her for last 4 years when she is past her peak.

Lol! An unsolicited advice - you should stick to cricket threads. You clearly have no idea about Olympic Sports
