Eh. You saying it doesn't make it a fact. Why don't you name those world tournaments which did not have top competitors? Will wait to see some details to back up your claim

BTW, how exactly do you think those top competitors qualify for Olympics? It's not an invitational event.

For qualification, you have events for qualification. Koreans didn't participate in world championship where Indians did well.  Same is the case in boxing. That American wrestler Shooting is no different. Level of competition and pressure is not same in those random events. #2 rank Deepak Punia easily lost to American David Taylor who was no where in ranking because he didn't participate in lot of tourneys to gain points. So these rankings should be taken with a pinch of salt.

All these things have already been explained by @Gollum and others on this thread.

If we look it closely, China is unstoppable in 5 sports - Diving (7), Gymnastics(4), Shooting(4), Table Tennis(4) and Weightlifting(7) . 26 out of 38 gold medals came from these 5 sports.

China is also now competing well in Athletics(2) and Swimming(3) - 5 gold medals. Traditionally China is weak in these two sports which have bulk of medals. But making progress.

China under performed in Badminton(2) this time with just 2 Gold medals.

Other niche sport which China is now targeting is the water sports -  Canoning (1), Rowing(1) and Sailing(1) . All these sports are dominated by Europeans.

Also, two more niche sports cycling(1) and Fencing(1) are now on radar of China.

If we compare China to USA,

USA has dominated in its two traditional   sports- Athletics(7) and Swimming(11) even though USA unperformed in sprint events in Athletics this time. Total 18 gold medals out of 39 came from these two sports.

Other sports where USA performed exceptionally were Wrestling(3), Shooting(3) , Basketball(3), Golf(2) and Volleyball(2).

USA under performed massively in Gymnastic(2) with just 2 Gold medals due to Biles pullout midway.

To round up the gold medal tally, its Cycling(1), Fencing(1), Cannoning(1), Surfing(1), Taekwando(1) and Waterpolo(1).

Haryana model to theek magar haryana jaise log kahan se laoge

Possibly start with diet..

1. pure ghee and pure milk...

2. Idk what percentage of India gets pure water (TDS less than 100) to drink, that's extremely crucial

3. Access to playgrounds... unfortunately Indian cities do not have enough playgrounds

4. Encouragement of parents to take sports professionally

@Gollum didn't call the rankings fake like you did. Indians won legit world events, doesn't make their ranking 'fake'.

So maybe, be cautious with words you use before running down our athletes especially sports you don't even follow properly.

But even in boxing and wrestling, there are several weight categories for both male and female.  We can still target those.  Greco Roman and weight lifting too.  We should look to field 30 athletes for boxing, wrestling, and weight lifting alone. There can even be a scenario where we have 2-3 athletes in just one category eyeing for a medal.

You cant have multiple participants in 1 weight category in any of boxing, wrestling and lifting... 1 person 1 category.

Rounding off my analysis of the top 3, here is how Japan manged to be in No.3 position.

Japan did it smartly-focused on its two main contact sports primary - Judo( 9) and Wrestling(5). That's freaking 14 gold medals out of its total 27. Classic example of choosing a sports and dominate it.

Japan also nicked out 3 Gold medals in a very niche sports- Skateboarding.

Gymnastics(2) and Swimming(2) are other sports where Japan bags few gold medals.

Baseball(1) and Softball(1) were surprise gold medals.

Boxing(1), Fencing(1), Table tennis(1) and Karate(1) rounds up Japan Gold medal tally.

Kerala Government awards a Dhoti, Shirt and 1000 rupees to P R Sreejesh, the great Wall of India.

I hope it's fake news. Sreejesh should reject the award like the Indian Hockey team had done in 2011 when Hockey India awarded them 25000 rupees as cash prize for winning the Asian Champions Trophy

Yes it's fake news and propaganda by anti-Kerala elements because it's not Kerala govt, but  handloom dept.

Dhoti shirt and 1000 rupees is token of appreciation to promote handloom industry which is reeling under covid.

Shreejesh won't the reject the award.

Kerala govt is planning a grad welcome for him. They don't need to make any announcement for him as of now. Kerala has been generous in case awards in past (many not as much as Punjab, Haryana).

China in last few years has invested heavily in swimming.  In coming years they will dominate it like now they do with Diving events.

I read somewhere that they have made Swimming mandatory in their Zhejiang province in order to clear their Entrance exams..  (NEET JEE)  style.

Of course they have provided the required Infrastructure in Schools to do that.

Yeah right, but all these two three sports have 7-8 weight categories in both men and women. If we can field one in everyone, we can still field 40-50 combined. Weight lifting, boxing, wrestling.

Another of the federation jokers passing the buck, this time the Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan SIngh.

Wrestling federation president blames Vinesh Phogat's coach for using TOPS money to train wife

https://thebridge.in/wrestling/wrestling-federation-president-blame-vinesh-phogat-coach-tops-money-wife-24255

Quote

In an interaction with The Tribune, Singh blamed sports NGOs, including Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) and JSW, and even the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), for spoiling the wrestlers.Singh said that the WFI was blindsided towards the prolonged training stints abroad

Imagine blaming the sponsors OGQ and JSW, who have been putting in a lot of money for Olympics Sports. Most likely because none of his cronies were taken to European countries during training visits. Not a surprise that this joker is a Lok Sabha MP.

Can we not kick out these leeches from all sports federations in one go?

They are just unhappy that they aren't able to make cut.

BJP will give free ride to such people and complain that everything has to be done by Modi.

Professionals should be running these and keep politics out of the sports.

When it comes to sports, all of these leeches are one and the same. The federation heads are spread across parties. For e.g. this joker Singh is a BJP MP. Table Tennis Federation head is some Chautala, Lawn Tennis Federation head is another BJP MP, Archery Federation is led by Arjun Munda (BJP), Badminton Federation head is Himanta Biswa Sharma (BJP), Basketball Federation head is K. Thangesj (Cong), Shooting head is Captain Amarinder's son (Cong), Aquatics Federation head is Digambar Kamat (Cong), Cycling Fed head is someone from Akali Dal. Each in their positions for years without any accountability.

Successful sports persons should come forward & help to kick out these leeches.  Public pressure can do a lot of things.  Media will never highlight this.

On first read, Sailing, Rowing and Canoing between them consumed 70m of funding! Really expensive sports

These are the disciplines where China fetched medals this time

Basketball 0 0 1 1
Boxing 0 2 0 2
Canoeing 1 2 0 3

Taekwondo 0 0 1 1
Weightlifting 7 1 0 8
Wrestling 0 2 2 4
Total 38 32 18 88

Like China we must look to dominate a few events, but we aren't going to have such a variety of events to medal in, definitely not in our lifetimes.

China's rise in Summer Olympics is nothing short of a miracle. I am sure they will start repeating this kind of performance in Winter Olympics, maybe this decade itself.

definitely in our lifetimes. heck in 20 years i'd say.

what china has done is not some magic thing. their economy has increased so they simply have more money to put into it.

by late 2030s - early 2040s we should be where china is now in terms of economy/hdi etc. don't think we'll be as successful as china is now because we won't have the camp system that countries like china, north korea have but definitely see us as a 55-60 medal, 15-20 gold country in 2040.

hope we host 2036 or 40. a home olympics not only allows you to win a lot of medals but the infrastructure and training provided in the leadup to the games are still useful post the games and come into use in future games. china jumped up a level in 2008 as did britain in 2012.

Can't...Haryana is good in boxing, wresting, throwing events.

To become like China we have to target many disciplines. How will other states manage in sports like swimming, diving, gymnastics, tennis, rowing, sailing, fencing, equestrian, basketball, golf, canoeing etc? India as a country hasn't reached that level where it can do well in these kind of sports against an international field. May happen in 2050s, not in immediate future.

haryana just has better infrastructure for sports i believe.

bhaker/chaudhary are from haryana and its a completely non physical event.
