The "Acche Din" for ICFers

For me the Acche Din would be

1) When Rahane retires.

2) When Sanju Manju Gives up commentary.

3) When India beats NZ in NZ in a test series.

4) When Rat gives up Captaincy in All formats.

5) When Rohit Sharma scores the first triple in ODI.

Do list yours.

Posted
  • Rohit scores consistently for us in Tests
  • End of Virat captaincy (hand over amicably with heavy PR or gets taken out kicking and screaming doesn't matter)
  • Maybe Rohit 200 in next WC?
  • Vihari replaces Rahane and scores consistently
  • Pant with a Viv 189 type score in an ODI win
  • Next ODI WC win with Rohit as cap'n

2. When India wins ODI world cup.

This itself is enough for me and will make me productive for an entire year or two. What a high it will be.

Something that bothered me for a long time-

  1. I wish we celebrate partnerships and trophy wins more rather than individual milestones.

I think it came from the mentality that we were so bad at cricket for so long (1930s-1990s/2000s) that the focus shifted to individuals like mankad, kapil, gavaskar, SRT, spin quartet, etc.

When we Test series in all SENA countries

only Aus done

I guess you meant it in recent times. Because we did win in Eng in '07 and before. and we have wins in NZ too, albeit a long time ago.

yes I mean with same core group. We 'should' win here and in SA easily.

Only NZ is tough

Eng is not going to be easy either, as we are finding out. the series is still in the balance, but not gonna be easy. best case scenario is to win this test somehow, and the next may get rained out. SA should be fairly easy because of their batting paucity. moreover, no more steyn, philander, morkel, oliver, abbott, etc. NZ will surely be very tough - we need strong batting

I mean should have been easy.We are making basic selection blunders. The batting order should have seen atleast one change by now

Since our last ICC trophy win these teams have tasted success in the only tournaments that matter

'14 Lanka

'15 Australia

'16 WI

'17 Pak

'19 Eng

'21 NZ

Disgrace that we have choked so often in KOs. First correct that awful record, rest all are secondary.

Beating NZ along the way a few times in SFs/Fs will be extra sweet. Also test series wins in Eng, RSA and most importantly NZ.

PS: Would also like to see the women win a WC, they too choked that winnable WC F last time. Even U-19 boys are chokers, wtf is wrong with Indian cricket? RSA was never this bad in the mental department.

there's 10 long-time test playing nations, which are the premier ones (not incl. the new entrants afg and ire). although bang have improved, one can exclude them and Zim. that leaves a total of 8.

and of this 8, what do I see? I see 6 diff teams with trophies. the only 2 missing ones: the perennial chokers SA and then the new chokers Ind. it's horrible.

it's like a disease... or a skill. when one group acquires this "ability", they pass it on to others.

Ind cricket should take a look at both our hockey teams. they punched well above their weight. that bronze was such an amazing achievement. people said it was the first medal since 1980, but I don't rate that one highly because of how many teams were missing. we have to go back to '72 Olympics and '75 hockey WC. and these were around 45-50 years ago. where is that mental toughness and fighting attitude to come from behind in the cricket team?

At least Saffers have been in steep decline since 2016. in 2015 WC SF rain screwed them over, otherwise ABDV was ready to launch a blitz attack taking target beyond the reach of Kiwis.

We have been consistently ranked in top 2 in this period, most of the losses were when we were favorites. And an ICC event almost every year, wasn't the case earlier. Poor WI, would they have gone trophyless in the 80s if we had 6-7 WCs scheduled in that decade?

We are worse than 90s and 2000s RSA since there were more realistic trophy contenders in that era, also they had to contend with GOAT Aus, kinda like the Kasparov-Karpov situation in the 80s or Kasparov-Anand in the 90s. Good enough to beat everyone else but that one behemoth stood in their way...1999 and 2007 WCs, RSA would have beaten every other team easily.

yes, and there's also the fact that saffers have other sports into which they pour their energy where they have improved (e.g., rugby). Ind is, in essence, fixated on cricket and still keeps choking over and over. they have made an art of it. Just like trump wrote "art of the steal", Ind and SA can collaborate on "art of the choke".

of the various events you listed, to me the most galling were '17 champions trophy final and the '19 semifinal with NZ.

P.S. I agree regd Karpov and Anand. Poor guys. Kasparov was a beast. Would have liked to see peak Kasparov vs. peak Carlsen vs. peak Fischer. I have not seen/read much of the latter, but some think that Kasparov was the greatest in terms of consistency but that Fischer at his peak could beat anyone on his day.

Wrong team selection in both, wrong toss decision in former. Kohli captain in both.
