Agree strongly !

This tendency of big stars batting in the top 3 in white ball cricket has prevented us from reaching our true potential.

Dhoni, Yuvi and Kapil before that were the only exceptions in it is in their hey days that we won our three World Cups.

Venky Iyer should open the innings in T20Is.

Yep he should open and Rahul at 5, Shreyas iyer does not fit in the squad sadly, Rohit-venky combo at the top, Surya at three, pant at 4, later Rahul, we need to develop 6-7 batters very quickly, preferably both should be able to bowl, if the selectors are doing their job properly then they need to keep a eye on abhishek Manohar who just looked apart in his innings a few days ago, there are some options in prerak mankad, shahrukh khan, riyan parag has not done much of note but he does have credidentials.

I liked Manohar's innings because he delivered under pressure and has the power to clear the ropes comfortably.

What type of a bowler is he ?

Don't think having too many players is good for the team.

We doesn't want to move from seniors and also want to play youngsters at unfavorable positions.

Result= total mess and no role calrity

I dont agree. The batting order should be built on team needs not what a player is comfortable doing.

We desperately need a MO power hitting seam AR specially since Hardik is not bowling regularly.Venky can be that.

I dont want big stars in top 3 too,but there we have lot of options. Personally,I prefer Shaw,Jaiswal as openers and Mayank./Tripathi at 3. Kishan can be MO+ backup opener.

Venky should bowl regularly too

Leg break googly, hopefully gets to bat soon, playing against Bengal right now.

Shaw has zero consistency, his execution is way below par, prone to getting clean bowled and ibw early on, tripathi at three ahead of sky? Mayank got his odi chances in aus and threw his wicket away every time but I love his intent, unless there is a complete change in the team I don't think selectors would bring in tripathi and Mayank

Shaw was very consistent this IPL. He has improved since VH trophy.More importantly he has a Sehwag like intent to hit first ball. I'm also looking at Shaw and Jaiswal as part time bowling options.

Mayank can be good in T20s if not ODIs.

SKY seems to be suited to 4-5. Tripathi has intent but yes not too polished.

Rohit, since he's gonna be captain and hence sure pick, can play a floater role like Smith.Ideally I don't want him in team.

I don't think current Indian management has courage to pick up an erratic batsman in the team. They look for stability.

This is why I think its unfortunate that BCCI wasn't able to convince Ponting to take on India coaching job.  Not for lack of trying - which is good to see.

Ponting rates Shaw very high, part of that is franchise loyalty, but not all of it.

I am very curious to see how Dravid handles the case of Prithvi Shaw over the course of the next 12 months or so.

Scored 11 in the 4 deliveries of the last over, basically 4 from his bat and caused Pant to score another boundary via some magical means.

Let's see if he can steady the ship and bash some minnow after a catch drop to replace a legendary cricketer.

regarding Iyer, what did folks expect to learn here that you somehow missed in IPL? IPL matches are more high stakes ergo more pressure and the bowling quality is as good and perhaps more varied. Somehow the tag of an T20I was supposed to make it tough for the debutant? Laughable.

IPLis crap when compared to International in terms of quality. In terms of entertainment, IPL trumps international due to teams being much closer in terms of strength.

Kind of different take. In terms of quality IPL is definitely way better.

However most of us are just more emotionally invested with Indian cricket even if it plays a pointless bilateral  even Bangladesh/ Zimbabwe.

International Wins make us happy or sad (under some circumstances :giggle: ) in international games while IPL apart from some trolling online there is no emotional gratification if your team wins or loses.

So it feels like it means a lot more when India is playing.

I don’t think apart from some CSK,KKR or to a lesser extent Mumbai and RCB fans, most fans  just have fun during IPl. I mean even in Delhi home games people want Dhoni to hit a last ball lunging 6 even if he is playing for the opposite team.

if quality of IPL is better, why do IPL stars fail in T20Is?

Because in IPL a Hardik Pandya has a Pollard to back him and Bumrah,Boult etc in his side

KKR has Russell a 140+ bowler and a brutal hitter and Lockie who bowls 150* in the same side. How many international sides have that combination? Only speaking about on paper combo though not talking about stats etc.

In IPL you have  7 Indian cricketers available to you and plug the 4 problem positions with overseas players, that is why we are so imbalanced because how many Indian cricketers are picked for their ability at 6-7 or because they can bowl 150+?

Say what? Most of ENG and AUS and NZ players are IPL stars as well. Did they fail in T20s too? India's lack of success in WT20 has very different reasons than the alleged lack of quality.

Most of overseas are stars before they enter IPL. They use it to further enhance their game etc.

There is definite lack of Indian T20 talent except 2-3 spots. And IPL should have addressed it by now.

It's not just imbalance or few spots. Guys like Rahul,Pant,Shami etc who do well in IPL fail to replicate it in intl specially in big games

That’s also because they play ~14 games per season. They also have duds along with some hits as well. If they have 3 great games and 11 average ones it makes up for it. Case in point Samson who plays 2.5 unbeleivable knocks every season and goes missing in the rest but we all have been  mesmerized by those knocks and don’t see the failures.

In a 2-3 match bilateral or a wc situation you have 1 failure also it gets more magnified.

Again, it's not IPL's job to address muddled selection and leadership of Indian cricket team. India has players who will walk all over journeymen cricketers - Mitch Marsh, Zampa, Smith, Finch, Stoinis - in the AUS T20 team especially in UAE conditions. Yet the aussies won and it wasn't because they are awash with talent.

Who are these guys?

How many guys can start hitting first ball in a crunch game like Marsh did?Even in IPL

How many guys can power hit at 6 and bowl seam. We have Hardik who bowls on and off and now Venky who just started.

You'll get them different answers on who our best leggie is let alone be better than Zampa,Hasaranga etc.

How many left arm quicks like Starc?

Aus is not the best T20 team and won partly due to tosses but still they have more talent in T20s

Samson is not a regular in the side for that reason.

However Rahul tops the charts,Shami is among highest wicket takers and so on.

that 1 failure has become the norm in big games though. If 14 games of more quality can't help them prepare for similar situations in big games, what will?
