Its not shocking if you think about if from a horses for courses pick. 

 

Saffers are #1 in pitch-fixing, and against India they will ensure that there will be zero grip on the wicket for spinners.  This is an absolute given.  At that point, for SA tour, Indian team is looking for a defensive spinner who can be looked at as a reasonably solid batsman - I mean, not Jadeja style 40+ averaging high quality bat, but at least some shade of that.  That's when Jayant starts to make sense.  He's a very solid batsman.  As a bowler, he's tall and will be able to make use of bounce and trajectory.  By all accounts, he has worked well with Dravid and is a student of offspin bowling - IIRC he also went to Chennai to stay and train with Ashwin to improve his bowling.  That indicates that even in non-helpful conditions, he's a reasonable bet to bowl at lease effectively enough not to be a "Jack Leach" type liability with ball in hand.   

 

This sort of logic is probably the reason why Indian think tank sent this Goutham fellow over on the A tour.  He's another guy who can bat a bit, tall bowler who's got some record of bowling effective as a defensive spinner.   If we look at Indian domestic circuit, and try to make a list of spinners who are good batsmen, its not a big list.  

 

Jayant ticks the boxes for temperament, batting, decent bowling and other intangibles.  Its not a bad pick by any means.  

 

But if you start thinking in terms of a spinner as a guy who is a murali-esque threat to pick 5-fers every match, then a lot of spinners are going to fall short on that account.  If you compare Jayant to a Lyon or a Keshav Maharaj, Roston Chase type players, then that's a reasonably favorable comparison.

 

Roston Chase is probably a good comparison for Jayant Yadav actually - but Jayant is more of a bowler who can bat vs Chase being the reverse.  But I think Jayant can come close to Roston's capabilities as a batsman honestly.  And that's a handy player to have in a squad touring SA. 

 

In all of this I feel sorry for Jalaj Saxena - from a numbers perspective he is probably a great fit for the role that Indian team is looking for, but his peak was like 5 years ago.  Timing screwed him up.

Saxena's 'peak' years coincided when Ash Jaddu were just awesome.  And he did get a few 'A' side games but didn't impress with bat as much.  

 

My perception of him was that he was more of a batsman than a bowler - and neither of his skills were really top shelf.  A lot of his stats are padded with performances against lower rung Ranji teams.  

 

In spite of all that, timing didn't work for him - now the Indian team has such a strong bowling unit that they can look to include a 5th bowler who's more of a batting contributor.  And this is only because under Virat, the team regularly started playing 5 bowler XIs.  So during Saxena's best days at a younger age, the team especially at home was more of a 4 man bowling unit, and Jalaj was never going to get in ahead of Ash or Jaddu in that scenario.

I get where you are coming from and I agree with the theory.

 

Jayant if he was bowling well makes sense.

 

He was dropping it too short many times last series.

 

Will be carted in SA and mostly be a liability with the ball I feel.

 

Unless he massively improves his accuracy.

 

Lyon is in a whole different planet to Jayant.

Express bowling was mentioning another spinner who was spinning it even on green tracks. Not sure why those bowlers dont get picked.

Next they’ll be asking for only pacers who can bat.

 

Only thing we seem to be missing in Team India are batsman who can bat.  There’s an idea…

He looked good due to spin in the pitch in Mumbai. In SA pitches they will milk him left , right & center with 1 singles & 2 s  and odd fours.
