Unfulfilled Test Cricketers (Should have done better in respect to their talent):

 

Criteria:

 

Batsmen, Average over 30 but under 40

Bowler, Average over 30 but under 40

 

Yuvraj Singh (Averages 33.92 with 3 Hundreds), played 40 Test Matches

 

KL Rahul (Averages 35.16 with 6 Hundreds), played 40 Test Matches so far, in progress

 

S Sreesanth (Averages 37.59 with 87 wickets), played 27 Test Matches

 

I Pathan (Averages 32.26 with 100 wickets with Ball, Averages 31.57 with 1 Hundred with Bat), played 29 Test Matches

 

P Ojha (Averages 30.26 with 113 wickets), played 24 Test Matches

KKD aka Dinesh Karthik. 26 tests 25 average.

 

Umesh Yadav. 51 tests 156 wickets. Could have been a lot better in Australia.

Yes, that's why I wrote in progress, hopefully by end of career they reach a better status with regards to their test record

Many pacers from 2000-2014 underachieved. Even Zaheer was so-so in tests. Munaf Patel, with his height and speed, could have been a good bowler, played only 13 tests though. Varun Aaron should have been given more matches. 100 test veteran played is averaging 32, LOL!

The player should have shown potential of being a good player, I don't think Dinesh Karthik did anything of note in Test Cricket.

he was big reason of our series win in England 2007 and had good showing in 2006 SA.

 

Definitely a wasted talent

Mention it in your OP. Didn't know average over 30 is a criteria.

Generally in Test Cricket:

 

Good Batsmen is one who averages over 40.

Good Bowler is one who averages under 30.

 

The players mentioned were in between the ranges above.

Didnt have feet movement but had very fast hands. Today's batsmen also have flaws - Shaw and Mayank with backlift issues, Gill with weakness against incoming ball, Iyer against quick short bowling, etc.

none of these three are unlucky IMO.

 

1. dhawan was FTB and HTB in Tests (not discussing LOIs here). he did well in NZ, but on real pattas. would have been found out on the green mambas that they started giving us later.

2. Rohit had the same issue outside SC - he was making 20s and 30s, and occasionally 50s, but no real knocks of value. he tightened up his game and has therefore been rightly given an extended run in the side.

3. Bhuvi was mostly played in conditions favorable to him, which explains low avg. however, once his pace, fitness, and swing dropped, he was rightly discarded.

of the 90s openers, he was the best after sidhu. however, that's not saying a lot. it is true though that there were some politics involved in his being booted out - I think he did well in his last test, yet was kicked out. Ramesh also held some stunning catches in close-in positions.

Yes, but I don't think clubbing them with people whose careers are virtually over is correct. Nways, my opinion. 

Especially, KL Rahul has a long career in front of him and he may very well make up and become a 45+ avg batsman after playing 100 tests. You cannot club him with Yuvi/Pathan/Ojha etc. whose careers are over. Its not accurate to put them in that list and say in progress because I think KLR is just beginning his purple patch in all formats.

That'd be hard if he keeps opening, unlike FTB Warner he doesn't play on too many dead tracks in India. Of course as other teams continue to get worse in tests, or India better, he will have a better chance at much higher avg than even 45 as an opener!

Correct. I said 45 as a figurative number that will prove that he is a good test batsman. My point is we cannot call him an unfulfilled test cricketer just yet. He has lot of time to make up for his past performances and build a solid career ahead.
