Arrests, Beatings and Secret Prayers: Inside the Persecution of India’s Christians

Quote

“They want to remove us from society,” a Christian farmer said of Hindu extremists. Rising attacks on Christians are part of a broader shift in India, in which minorities feel less safe.

INDORE, India — The Christians were mid-hymn when the mob kicked in the door.

A swarm of men dressed in saffron poured inside. They jumped onstage and shouted Hindu supremacist slogans. They punched pastors in the head. They threw women to the ground, sending terrified children scuttling under their chairs.

“They kept beating us, pulling out hair,” said Manish David, one of the pastors who was assaulted. “They yelled: ‘What are you doing here? What songs are you singing? What are you trying to do?’”

The attack unfolded on the morning of Jan. 26 at the Satprakashan Sanchar Kendra Christian center in the city of Indore. The police soon arrived, but the officers did not touch the aggressors. Instead, they arrested and jailed the pastors and other church elders, who were still dizzy from getting punched in the head. The Christians were charged with breaking a newly enforced law that targets religious conversions, one that mirrors at least a dozen other measures across the country that have prompted a surge in mob violence against Indian Christians.

Pastor David was not converting anyone, he said. But the organized assault against his church was propelled by a growing anti-Christian hysteria that is spreading across this vast nation, home to one of Asia’s oldest and largest Christian communities, with more than 30 million adherents.

Anti-Christian vigilantes are sweeping through villages, storming churches, burning Christian literature, attacking schools and assaulting worshipers. In many cases, the police and members of India’s governing party are helping them, government documents and dozens of interviews revealed. In church after church, the very act of worship has become dangerous despite constitutional protections for freedom of religion.

...

To many Hindu extremists, the attacks are justified — a means of preventing religious conversions. To them, the possibility that some Indians, even a relatively small number, would reject Hinduism for Christianity is a threat to their dream of turning India into a pure Hindu nation. Many Christians have become so frightened that they try to pass as Hindu to protect themselves.

The subscription price of NY Times here in India is lesser than even a masala rag like The Times of India. Nobody here reads or cares about what this "elite" newspaper prints.

Moreover, with scums like Rana Ayyub on their rolls, everyone knows their agenda.

Mob Storms Catholic School In MP Over 'Religious Conversion' Claims, Pelt Stones; Students Escape

This from a BJP supporting **** channel masquerading as a new channel, the same channel that promotes hate against minorities.

So more fake news then?

India has many religions that's why India is such a fantastic society, but as long as we have the BJP and Modi in power the minorities will see more attacks against them.

The Christians in India are only 2% of the population, Muslims are 15% etc, as I voted for the BJP I am starting to see what the BJP is all about.

The BJP have done some good, and lots of bad, but this **** against the minority's in India has to stop.

And we compare ourselves to a **** country like Pakistan and we beat our chest, but yet the same **** that happens in Pakistan happens in India as well.

I am always against mob justice but having said that, this conversion business is a real menace. If the school was indulging in it then frankly they invited the trouble.

A colleague of mine has his son studying in a missionary school. They mandate all students to be present during what they call "Christmas celebrations" at the school. Last year his son couldn't make it due to him being on vacation. As a result, the parents were asked to come to the school personally and justify his absence. The Principal was visibly p!ssed.

Won't be surprised one bit if this converting thing turns out to be true in this case.

Some of the schools are run by Hindu religious institutions in Karnataka and they are mandated to exempt other religion students from chanting Bhagavadgeeta or other Vedic chants.  Why cant the same be applied to Hindu students in missionary schools?

Religious conversion even via marriage should be banned. State should also mandate it that in marriages, the mothers religion doesn’t change. Any attempt even what looks as voluntary will be treated as coaxed and father will be arrested with marriage nullified. And children of women will be same religion as mother.

and my message to NRI's who support BJP and Modi.

If somebody in west asks you, simply say "oh its a total shame etc" but keep supporting Modi the RSS VHP and other Dharmic organisations via money and efforts.

This was always an asymmetrical fight or struggle with the west on religion which is skewed. Not just India but several countries in Asia face the same issue.

No need to feel guilty or conflicted.

That’s so simple yet poignant.

When native Americans revolted and burnt churches in Kaneda , there was widespread support from all liberals and they had opEds and articles of stories on how the Church and government brainwashed Native American children and forced them to learn in missionary schools and made them forget their roots.

Now, India is trying to protect themselves from such cultural genocide, they play victim . Hypocrite bunch

Pastors will say anything to get more western funds.

Its a business for them.

True to an extent, but in places like Kanyakumari , Rameswaram, the number of churches have gone up like 300% . Most of coastal fishermen villages have been converted by such western funds. Need to tie the FCRA act to anti-conversion bill. Kerala, TN and AP will soon become like Mizo, Nagaland, bible belts.
