Positives ----

... Fast bowlers Siraj and Prasidh

... Bumrah as Vice Captain

... Venkatesh Iyer as a batting allrounder

... Kishan and Ruturaj as batsmen

Negatives ----

... 3 trundlers in the squad. Just 1 or 2 of them as bowling all-rounders would have been ok.

... Deepak Chahar was very poor with the ball in the NZ T20Is. But gets rewarded with a ODI squad berth and test backup berth. Amazing !

... What is the point of choosing oldies like Dhawan and Bhuvi, keeping in mind the 2023 World Cup !

... No big hitting allrounder at 7. ( If Venkatesh is played at 7 then we will play with just 5 bowlers )

... Why no Shah Rukh Khan ?

... Where is Prithvi Shaw ?

My PREFERRED Playing 11 out of those selected in the squad.

** With a view to developing a good team for the World Cup 2023 and trying out new players

1. Ruturaj

2. Kishan ... explosive opener cum left hander

3. Kohli ... sheet anchor ( or is it $hit anchor nowadays ? )

4. Shreyas

5. Rahul ... he is much better as big hitter at 5

6. Pant

7. Venkatesh ... batting allrounder

8. Shardul ... bowling allrounder

9. Washington / Ashwin

10. Siraj

11. Prasidh

Omission of Shaw is a big, big disappointment and shows that selectors are still living in 90s/00s. We need opening batters who score at 110-120 SR even if their avg happens to be around 35. And Shaw is the only one in domestics who can fulfill that as of now.

I would ideally like to see this lineup with an eye toward future, but most of the players are not even in the XI:

1. Shaw, 2. Gaekwad/Padikkal, 3. Gill, 4. KLR, 5. V. Iyer, 6. Pant/Kishan (wk), 7. Samad/Abhishek/Shahrukh Khan (only if he learns to bowl), 8. S. Thakur/W. Sundar/P. Mankad, 9. Axar/R. Chahar/R. Ashwin, 10. Bumrah, 11. Siraj/Prasidh

Batting till 9 and 6 bowling options.

An excellent team, but a bit too light on bowling since Prasidh is erratic, and Venky can't bowl 10 overs. I'd suggest a slight change:

1. Ruturaj

2. Pant: play the role of Gilly [rotate with Kishan if needed]

3. Kohli

4. Shreyas

5. KL Rahul

6. Venky

7. Washington

8. Lord (Shardul)

9. Ashwin/Boobi

10. Siraj/Prasidh

11. Bumrah: he will need to play since they made him VC

6 bowling options and batting till 9.

Good team.

My only issue with this team is that Washington can't hit big and we need a big hitter at 7.

This is the primary reason why I have gone with Venkatesh at 7 ( Jadeja or Axar will reclaim this spot when fit and Venkatesh will go up to 6 )

Another reason why I have used Venkatesh as the 5th bowler is because he did remarkably well as a bowler in VHT 2021 and does have a good yorker.

Bumrah will obviously play ... but I really want to see Siraj and Prasidh bowling in tandem to find out who would be the better fit.

I concur with your assessment. However, I think Washington's batting is a bit underrated in LOIs - it's true that he's not done well in domestics, but that's partly down to pitches (especially in TN) and being shunted up and down the order. One option is that he plays at 6 and Venky at 7. Then Venky and Lord can smash at 7 and 8. I agree that once Axar/Jaddu return, it will be easier to rejig batting.

If Dravid continues to respect seniority instead of backing youngsters, we should safely say good bye to any ICC trophies during his tenure as well. Disappointing squad loaded with senior TTFs

All Indian coaches have infatuation with "experience". Yuvi was brought back during Kumble's time after the 2015 WC, when there was practically zero chance of him lasting till the 2019 WC. Even Gambhir was given a test or two, though as an injury replacement. Ditto for Parthiv Patel. In Shastri's time we had to endure the Dhoni torture and towards the end of his tenure, Pujara-Rahane pain combo. Dravid is continuing the same trend. Are these guys blind to think that washed up players a few years removed from their sell by date are going to resurrect their best selves magically? At best you keep them in the squad as an injury standby and to pass on knowledge to the younger cricketers in a mentor type role. You can't keep them as starters!

Is Dhawan going to be the scheme of things for 2023 WC? Because Rohit is guaranteed as is Kohli.

What really goes on in these selection meets?

I can predict our "great" selectors preferred XI for 2023 WC:

Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Tuk-tuk batter #1, Tuk-tuk batter #2, Tuk-tuk batter/keeper #3, can't bowl/bat/field "all-rounder", trundler #1 (boobi), trundler #2 (deepak/harshal), non-wkt taking spinner, Bumrah

the problem with both this and the lineup quoted in the post is a lack of a wrist spinner. we badly need to groom one since Kulcha has become a thing of the past now or will badly standout as the only team without a gun leg spinner.

In this team I'd have SKY ahead of Iyer, he deserves a chance imo even if i feel Iyer is more clutch than him mentally.

while your concern is understandable, both my squad and that of @express bowling were from the squad chosen by selectors; only wrist spinner there is chahal, and I think one should look beyond him.

SKY can't bowl. one needs a lineup with 6 bowling options, that's why Venky Iyer is there

oh i meant shreyas iyer. Pandya not being fit has created other issues for us which we are only now beginning to admit and try to solve.

Dhawan and Bhuvi want to play until their children represents India.

Dhawan, chahal and boobkumar are back. Spineless selections and they will play until we lose 2 more world cups. When was the last time boobkumar took a wicket?
Dhawan did well in whatever matches he played in WC
