See the pitiable state of Prithvi Shaw.
He is leading Ajinkya Rahane and if he performs well, he will be back in team India> If not, he will be dropped and guys like him can hope to be back in contention for test selection.

So, as a captain he will be secretly hoping that Rahane fails so that he will get he chance to play for India sooner.

rahane and shaw are not even remotely competing for same position, or even same format

I agree with all of this.

 

I still would rather have Shaw instead of Rahane at the same spot in the test team.

 

Would be funny for the lols to see Shaw run out Rahane.

 

I do respect Rahane a lot though, for what he did in Australia and the character of the person. We cant really blame him if the BCCI and TM keep selecting him, Rahane has to do whats best for him and his family and that means staying as long as possible in the Indian Test team.

 

Even if Rahane plays and scores a century against Sri Lanka, its no proof that he is back but rather an aberration.

shaw shpuld not play in middle order given weakness vs spin. of course, on current form, he is better than rahane but that is not saying much.

 

As for rahane, yes he did well but unfortunately his batting is too weak to allow him in the team. gone are the days of mike brearley. excellent captain, terrible batter

You can definitely carry an excellent captain that is a terrible batter, but only if the rest of the team is quality.

 

However this is definitely not the case with India, mind you we have been carrying Kohli for some time now.

A senior player playing Ranji trophy under a relatively junior player..what a surprise! NOT

 

Keeps happening all the time in every Ranji season. In fact it's good for Shaw to have a tactical mastermind like Rahane alongside him. Will learn a lot.

 

Expecting Rahane to play a role similar to what Gambhir did for Delhi after 2012 - get the team united and inspire the youngsters to play at their best.

Absolutely crucial for India's success in the short term in Test Cricket that they both fail.

 

If afforded the opportunity to play Tests vs SL and happen to score runs, they could remain in the side for another 12 months.
