Should India go into overseas tests with a 6,7 and 8 of Jadeja, Pandya and Washington from now onwards?

Recommended Posts

Well given the inability of the newly tried batters - Vihari, Gill and Iyer and even Mayank or Shaw have failed continuously overseas, can India give a think to going with a batting lineup where they have a no 6,7 and 8 as , Jadeja, Pandya and Washington Sundar in any order? A team like this for example ( overseas tests specifically as Ashwin and Axar will be there in Asia):-

5. Rishabh Pant(wkt)

6. Ravindra Jadeja

7. Hardik Pandya

8. Washington Sundar

And then the three pacers. Shardul anyways doesn't bowl a lot of overs and Hardik can bowl 7-8 overs in a day. Apart from that we also have Jadeja and Washington to bowl and two different style too. That will ensure enough rest for our pace trio who are wicket takers and know how to get the job done if they remain fresh and firing.

The reason behind this team is because anyways, the likes of Mayank, Vihari, Iyer are not gonna average 30+ overseas in SENA as it looks like. Better to use Washington and Pandya rather as they give us something more with bowl too.

Jadeja has been playing tests since ages and only hit a purple patch with the bat recently. It may not last long ... Pant is bound to get into a bad phase  sooner or later (happens to most cricketers)

Whoever is tried needs to have the talent and be a competitive cricketer. Once tried, he should be given a decent run ... Ranji is not the best criteria to judge test cricketers for overseas (as Vihari & S Iyer's example show at the moment)

You know Pandya can’t bowl more than anything 2 overs every couple of days.

I am assuming Pandya will bowl around 8 overs in a 90 over test match. The idea is to strengthen the batting lineup without weakening the bowling attack. If not then we have Shardul there.

bowling is least of our worry, lets not mess with it.

sundar playing in a spot of main bowler - no way. Either he plays as batsman or an all rounder ,

Pandya body is not fit for test currently , lets just let him play LOI for few yrs

This is only for overseas tests. Ashwin and Axar aren't going anywhere in Asian games.

Well how about Sundar in the top 4/5 then Pant may be at 6, then Jadeja & finally Thakur?

He can start anywhere and based on performances move up the order. The usual protocol of the system is to try a youngster at a position lower and then if he improves and shows ability that he can bat higher, he gets to bat higher up too.

Pant started at 7 too and now batting at 5.

Ind only has a handful of most conditions cricketers -> Bumrah, Shami, Gill (his best years are ahead), Pant, & SDP (if he develops to his potential and if interested in playing tests) ... Have to see how guys like Umran, Sundar, & Moshin turn up

For the next couple of years, Ind can try:

Gill

KL

Sundar (At #3 as he has played as an opener. Can swap position with Pujara)

Pujara (No Ind test team without Pujara & Pant. Strokemakers to play around him)

Pant

SDP (Needs to play as a specialist batsman as he has the talent to succeed in tests in most conditions. Just needs to tighten up his game for tests, which will happen with experience)

Jadeja

Moshin

Shami

Umran or Siraj or ...

Bumrah

That's the point mainly. Specialist batsman aren't giving us anything more than batting all rounders or wicket keepers barring a handful who are truly special talent.

Neither are the specialist spinners giving us anything special. Ashwin for example don't have a fi-fer overseas. Jadeja has produced better output than him as all rounder. Trying all rounders seems to be better option than specialists as all rounders will do the job when the conditions are in their favour which is exactly what specialists are also doing.

Yes, there is not much difference in batting quality b/w most specialists & all-rounders, who are good or even better batsmen but have divided focus so if they become more focused on batting, they can change the competitive equation for Ind

Sundar should be a top 4-5 bat who can bowl in tests.

if you are looking for a number 6-7-8 spin allrounder than Ashwin is still up there.

Don't go by batting position. The plan is to strengthen the batting lineup by having proper batsman till 8. It can be Sundar at 5, Pant at 6, Jadeja 7 and Pandya 8 too.

Ashwin overseas is not much of use as we saw in South Africa tour and Sundar is a better batsman so he can add a lot more with bat. For bowling, the three pacers remain the key and Pandya to bowl 8-10 overs in first inning. While in second inning, we can use Jadeja and Sundar more.
