The Deepak Hooda conundrum

What exactly is the point of his selection? He doesn't have a great record against hard length deliveries and that was mostly in India. In Australia its much tougher.

Also he is rarely used as the 6th bowling option.

There has atleast been some logic or performance based reasons for others' selections but this is particularly baffling.

We found out that he is not a finisher. He can only bat up the order and when the spinners are on he can go after them. He did that in England by going after Moeen Ali wasting no time. He is not much of use in the back end. He can be used in a different way like a pinch hitter. If he plays Ashwin cannot play. Because Ashwin fills the overs and this guy doesn't bowl.  India just picked purple cap holders and players for the sake of variety. They didn't have a clue who will be playing what role.

All our top batsmen want to bat up the order and don't want to bowl ,we hardly have any uvs or rainas do we.Aus conditions are too hard for him but it's not like others are doing any better.

I will give him benefit of doubt. Straight away playing at Perth first match.  But his role cannot be a finisher role. He struggled a few times he was playing that role.  Using him as a pinch hitter like  Yusuf pathan played in 2007 will have less risk. His wicket is dispensable anyway assuming he can bowl 2 or 3 overs. Also a decent fielder

Just replace Hooda with names like Chahal, Harshal lol SKY/Kohli only saving grace in the batting department. In the bowling department Arshdeep is the only stand out. Bhuvi slightly above average. Otherwise everybody has sucked so far.

Pinch hitting is too tough on the type of pitches India has got, need an Asian type pitch .And why should he want to throw it away when others won't.

He did well in England against Moeen Ali. Josh Little who posed all sorts of problems to English batsmen in the match they lost to Ireland was handled very well by Hooda in Ireland. His height is an advantage in Australia. He can ride the bounce. India is not going to bring another player now. Let us try to use the available resources in an effective way.

are you talking about the same game where Ireland almost chased down our score :phehe:

Josh Little from what I have seen is the next Boult. Unfortunately plays for a small team.

in Aussie conditions he will cause problems to our top order leave alone Hooda.

Hooda should have been played in practise games and NED,  ideally slotted in the top order (#1-3).

It is guys like SKY, Hooda, Pant, SDP, who when they fire can win a tournament. England had Mooen at 3 and Livingston at 4 in the last game as if they fire, the team will get an above par total.

If you want consistency where just about a competitive total is scored (and feel good by watching good looking strokes), go with Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Manish Pandey, KL, etc. … They will score their runs first and then play for the team, doing just enough to make the team competitive but not win anything major!

Their batting is a very strong batting unit in certain conditions. They bat till the end. Also it was our B string bowling. That shouldn't take away anything from his innings.  We cannot use perth match as a reference to criticize him. Everyone except SKY was clueless upto 10th over. Infact south african batsmen were even more clueless against swing.

He isn't giving even 1 over per game. Just played in assumption he may bowl. We might as well play extra batter and use Kohli if needed.

Which is why i say if he plays Ashwin cannot.  He should be used as an utility player a 6th bowling option and a floater.

Ashwin is a better option. Even a decent batsman at 7-8.

Hooda has zero utility

Waste of a selection.. 1 spot wasted. Him bowling pies isn't enough to consider him as 6th bowler...Guys like Maxwell,Markram bowls way better than him and they are proper batters. Unfortunately questions haven't been asked to Rohit about his selection in Playing XI both the time he is played. Completely miscalculated selection both in squad and then in XI. Samson/Iyer should have been in squad over him.

Bowlingwise Ashwin is. Battingwise Hooda a bit more upside especially against spinners. He is a better fielder too.

a lot of tailender batsmen and part time pie chuckers would be considered allrounders in our team :phehe:

Thats how bad it is.

Guys like Rauf, Shaheen, Boult,Southee, Starc, Cummins, Rabada etc do a better job than some of our specialist hitters :)

Come on man. he is not that bad :) He still averages 36 @ 153 in T20. When he bats in top his averages is 52 at a  strike rate  of 161.

19, 16, 1, 0, 6, 0, 1, 8, 8, 28, 23, 13   These are maxwell's last few innings scores lol Maxwell was definitely good. Now he is just a passenger.

Not speaking of Hooda but in general.

Shankar, Rishi Dhawan, Binny, Dube all got chances because of their “allround” ability. Make whatever of that. :)

Even though can use Binny if he is available for the next game :giggle:

bit yes, but not a decisive advantage. He has to make top 6 as a batsman first. He doesnt
