India's test batting in 2020s

From 01 Jan' 2020 onwards, batting average :

 

Pant 45

Sharma 46

Jadeja 39

Pujara 30

Kohli 26

Rahane 24

Gill 32

Rahul 33

Iyer 54

 

Pant has basically carried this lineup with assistance from Iyer and Jadeja. Rohit at the top has done well but largely injured in 2022. 

 

Pujara, Kohli and Rahane have been terrible in last 3 years. Pujara's 2022 was better with average of 45 but he was equally **** in 2020 and 2021.

 

Zero contribution/performance from Kohli in any of the series in last 3 years.

 

India's results in last three years :-

 

NZ vs India 2020- Lost 0-2( all failed)

Aus vs India 2020- Won 2-1( Pant was the main guy with support from Pujara,Rahane, Jadeja)

 

India vs Eng 2021- Won 3-1( Sharma and Pant were standouts)

ENg vs India 2021/22- Draw 2-2( Sharma, KL, Pant and Jadeja hit 1 hundred each) 

India vs Newzealand 2021- Won 1-0( Iyer's series and spinners performing with bat)

 

SA vs India 2022 - Lost 1-2 (KL and Pant did well)

India vs SL 2022 - Won(Pant, Jadeja and Iyer dominated)

India vs BD 2022- 1-0 (Pant and Iyer dominated while Pujara performed in 1 test)

 

To conclude, Indian batting is at its weakest ever with top 4 batting terribly( and the actual captain staying injured for an year) leaving Pant, Iyer and Jadeja to do all the hard yards.

Need to drop atleast one of Pujara or Kohli and play Sarfaraz or anyone doing well in domestics

We might need to drop both, but it's highly unlikely! Also KL will likely start since Gill hasn't performed here, ideally Sundar & Jadeja should both make this squad & even if Sundar has to open I'd include him. Nearly impossible but KL/Pujara/Brat should all go next series

with rahane gone they formed new trimurti now with kl, pujara & kohli

ideally we need sundar, Jaddu, Pant, Iyer in middle order. this is a quartet that I can trust in subcontinent (not Iyer overseas).

I think India can safely go with 5 batters including WK Pant with Jadeja at 6. This will not sacrifice anything. There is no point to sacrifice Ashwin, Kuldeep etc for an extra batter who gives no confidence. I have more confidence in Ashwin, Kuldeep, Thakur scoring 20 odd runs down the order than the seniors top the order.

Sundar -- Axar looks pretty ordinary all round except that first series with the ball. I cant see Axar as current or future all rounder with his current form. But he can be in the Mix.

Umesh / Shami ( For now and then replace a bowler who can swing the bat)

Siraj/ Umran / Prasidh

I can sacrifice one or two batters like Pujara/ Virat / Rahane and all bowling options. Specially because the batters are there just on paper and rarely perform in a group anymore. Its been 3-4 years like that. I dont care Pujara scored well last match. Its a regressive step to bring him back.  Please do not drop Gill from Tests. Give him the long rope. why not when Rahane played so long.

 

I want to see SHAW. Even if he fails few times, He will score quick when he does well and not like we have Super batters in top 4. Ideally play Rohit in India and KLR overseas. Get another opener if need be and put Gill at no.3 

 

I would say give SKY a shot in the middle order if needed.. Why not ? the guy is in great form and plays attractive cricket. If Either Sundar or Jadeja are absent SKY can also play with Iyer. 

 

That is a group of 19. Get any good batter of bowler into the mix to make a decent group of 20 players to choose from. Say farewell to Trimurti Virat/Pujara/Rahane.

Yes, KL will play ahead of Gill. Gill's 100 was decent knock but not right up in terms of quality.

 

Sundar will only play if Iyer is dropped. Iyer won't be dropped unless he gets 2 tests to prove himself. I feel he can survive though and probably attack Lyon better than most. Pant at 5 and Jadeja at 7, Ashwin 8 and Axar/kuldeep 9.
