How Ashwin prepared for WTC final - an interview with Prasanna Agoram

Recommended Posts

“The turnaround from white-ball to red-ball takes time, starting from sleep cycle to bowling. Everything is a habit if you follow it for a few days. So Ashwin started off by undoing the old habits where if Rajasthan didn’t have a game, he would be off to bed early,”

“He has been asking the degree of turn at the Oval this season and in the past few years on each day, because he will get a fair indication of what to expect from the batsmen. If Australia bat first and there is not much turn, they will definitely use their feet. Someone like Smith will not hesitate to come down the track and flick over mid-wicket or through covers. So when you know the degree of turn is minimum, you will avoid bowling certain deliveries and set fields accordingly,” Prasanna reveals.

Regardless of success he plans very well. Actually he should have been the captain of India by default after Kohli. This Rohit out of the blue insert himself into the set up. Then KL Rahul miraculously became the second choice. Guys like Ashwin/Kuldeep can't even find a place in the side. Axar the top scorer couldn't find a spot here. I am sure Sundar would not have even been part of the squad. He was the net bowler for India.

Rohit PR is reason Kohli was made to quit in first place. So he was gonna be next captain.

They don't like bowler captain anyway. Kumble was also made as a last resort

Atleast Kumble was on his last legs. MSD had just won. Almost all seniors were going out. So very little competition. But Ashwin/Rohit/Rahane all same age group. They even made Bumrah the test captain who has zero clue about setting fields or devising strategies.'

HE WOULD BE An outstanding captain. he has that fighting spirit. we would win a lot. even though coolie won but he is hot headed. thats why in pressure games, players feel bogged down.

nice to see his prep go up in vain. I wish I got to see his raging face when he got dropped again.

these rank turner bois can't do much overseas anyway, although jaddu and ashwin are not terrible as such

Who can? Pacers are supposed to do well here but they shat the bed again as did batsmen.

Atleast Ash/Jaddu are reliable and match winning at home with both bat and ball

high quality pacers do well in most conditions. high quality spinners also have 1-2 bad places, that's about it. neither ash nor jaddu have good career records overseas in most countries.

and our home pitches are so spin oriented than most domestic spinners would do fine on those pitches as well

yeah saw how quality pacers did here.

Rich bashing spinners when even pacers fail in pace friendly conditions

Ashwin Jaddu Axar are quality inside SC atleast. Both with bat and bal

Pacers fail even in friendly conditions. No 2nd string too.

for many years of our high performance (from around 2016-2022), the pacers led the way. you can look it up - there was a 5 yr period where bumrah, shami, umesh, ishant had excellent records. I already said current pacers are not doing well; we should replace them with other pacers, not with loads of spinners.

if we just pick bowlers for batting, we might as well as play the following in all conditions for "batting" ability: thakur, axar, ashwin, jadeja, boobi/pandya

on the other hand, they are admittedly better bats than trimurti

See the numbers of Ash/Jaddu in SENA in your given period. Not bad at all. This is excluding their batting plus

No one is asking to pick bowlers on basis of batting, but if you are gonna pick bad bowlers anyway might as well beef up batting.

Need 3 good strike bowlers other two have to be AR

except that in this period, some had fantastic records and deserved (in the past) to be selected despite some being noobs with the bat. look at ishant, bumrah, thakur; even shami was pretty decent, except for Eng IIRC.

IMO, the ideal SENA combo is: bumrah, siraj/prasidh, prasidh/sen/rana + thakur/seam AR  + ash/jaddu/axar

tall pacers who hit the deck hard and get bounce are valuable. umesh is too old, shami is also looking washed out; these 2 need to go soon

not talking about that period. Even spinners did well then as posted above.

Now without Bumrah and aging Umesh/Shami the attack is bad

you play 2 spinners overseas, I don't think they will run through sides in SA, Eng, NZ, and Oz. need to find other pacers.
