Many ex cricketers have shown disappointment with Sarfaraz Khan not being selected in the Windies squad.

This will take a lot of pressure on selectors when they don't select deserving players in the squad

Was he the one who fudged age and got banned ? If yes cheating is something that makes them wary of selecting him.

He is a known player since high school days. No age fudging. Manjot Kalra was banned briefly for cheating by 2 months or so.

Why was Sarfraz batting at number 5 , instead of number 3, when guys like Jaffar and others who are less experienced are batting at number 3 and 4.

Shouldn't matter if someone scores 301, 275, 226, 177 at any position.  There is hardly a difference between 4 and 5. Laxman whenever Azharuddin played batted at no.5 for Hyderabad.

It matters a lot, no Laxman always batted at number 3 for Hyderabad even Azhar played for Hyd.Batting at number 3/4 is always considered tougher than number 5.

MV sridhar  was their three. Azhar was 4 when he was available. 1997 was after he made India debut.

Didn't I put a scorecard where both MV and Azhar played. Maybe during his initial days in 92/94 VVS batted at number 5 but once he became main stay of Hyderabad batting he was always number 3.

His record breaking season in 1999/00 he was alway batted number 3 even when Azhar played.

Ab played at 5 or 6 65% of his matches. Returns are not that good above that. Waugh, Clarke many successful no 5s were there in history.  Look at Harry Brook. He prefers batting at 5. Openers are supposed to be the best players as per that logic something that even Sachin didn't do

Harry Brook debuted at number 3 in FC.

No openers are not best batsmen in the team .,Number 3 and 4 are usually the best batsmen in team.Once players like Waugh and AB got estalished in international cricket depending on their team needs, they moved down the lineup.

Viv batted mostly at number 3 but moved down the lineup as he grew older and Richie Richardson batted at number 3.

A young batsman coming thru ranks mostly bat in the top 4  for their domestic teams.

I don't know why Sarfraz did not bat in 3 or 4. I am not saying that is the only reason held against him but it can be a factor.

That is an idd requirement as 1 to 5 belong to specialist batsmen. He was batting at that position.even in under 19. Also the logic rhat opener will.do better at 5 or 6 is incorrect. Rohit failed in the Mo then only pushed up the order. If he can serve well at 5 that is good enough.  If he fails move on instead of inventing excuses to reject a hardworking batsman. Indian selection is purely dictated by select IPL owners. Even that is not guarantee if you are not part of some top franchisee. Rinkus omission is a case In point. Nobody knows why Ruturaj was picked for Tests  it is a total clusterf#$%.  Today it is sarfraz. Tomorrow it might be someone else. But for injury sundar and Thakur  would have never played Tests.  That is the only way we will see some new faces.

Batting at number 5 means he rarely gets to face new ball. Yes he will face second new ball but by that time he is set and has already played long innings. So it becomes easier to face second new ball.

Sarfraz looked over matched against fast bowling in IPL and is hefty. IMO they were held against him.He is liability as a fielder.

Nothing wrong in getting Rituraj in the squad, he might not play at all.You are going all over the place with your theories.

Sundar did not deserve to play over Ashwin, he is pure bits and pieces player who is somehow regarded very high by some folks here. I rate Tilak Verma far more highly than Sundar for white ball cricket.

Everyone thought highly of Thakur that is why he made his debut before Siraj.

The batting position debate was probably triggered by the cricinfo article which questions the domestic bowlers freshness & effectiveness of newball in Indian conditions. Comparision to Harry Brook or AB in South african condition is probably not relevant.  We need to be comparing the batsmen selected by Indian selectors

Are you telling me he never faced newer ball in his 3 seasons? So it is easy to score 275 batting at 5 even when the score is 44/3. Somebody has to bat at 5 right? Why not him. These are all excuses manufactured by BCCI mouthpieces.  If they want to give a run to someone they will keep on giving no matter how much they suck.   He is relatively new to first class as well.  I rather take a guy who can score 200 at 5 rather than a guy who scores 25 at the top. England uses Crawley, Duckett. Not the best players in their side.

As per Rohit Sharma, Jaiswal will debut as an opener in the first test. While Gill has asked the TM that he want to bat at no 3 as he played in MO for most of his cricketing journey.

If true, then this probably is an indication that Gill also sees himself as a long term Middle Order batsman. In that case Ruturaj can have a case as a second opener once Rohit retires.
