All said and done, the chosen team is close to the 15 best cricketers in the country that will represent us in World Cup.

There are no glaring omissions as such. Who else could have been drafted in-

(spinners) Ashwin, Washington,  Chahal
(batsman) Jaiswal, Tilak, Samson, Ruturaj
(pacers) Prasidh, Arshdeep, Umran

From the above, only Washington could have been prepared at No. 8 role instead of Axar.
Tilak over Surya could also been tried out a year ago . But certainty not few days before world cup.

Other that that, rest of these guy will not make that much a difference.

Why all wrist slitters are the permanent residents on ICF? Other than SKY who is a dubious call, who else would you drop from the squad realistically?

Tilak/ Rutu/ Rinku/ Yashasvi will eventually replace some seniors, but based on who has played in last 12 moNths, this is the best team ee could have.

Now relax, setback and support your team! Chak de India, sorry Bharat!

Last 2 games show the depth and quality.

We should still tweak the 3rd spinner/ 4th pacer after Aus ODIs.

Just remove one of the SLA's and get an extra pacer in. Even back in 2011, the extra spinner in Piyush was a complete liability and  Ashwin was played as second spinner only in Ahmedabad and Chennai . 2 spinners was enough even then. And the rules allowed extra outfielder in middle overs and there was only 1 ball etc.

You only need 2 spinners at the best of times when the pitches assist spin and, in worst case scenario, you need one to replace the other if there is a niggle.

India is playing 9 matches in 9 different venues with a lot of traveling. Quicks will need rotation. One extra fast bowler won't be enough especially considering Shami's advanced age and Bumrah's back concerns.

Just get 4-5 overs of part-time spin from the batters. Even this bit can do so much for the balance of the XI.

How many pacers did the 2011 WC squad have? Zak, Nehra, Munaf and Sreesanth (as Praveen's replacement). This squad has 5 of them.

Chawla played 3 matches, Ashwin played 2 matches. Primarily because Yuvraj became the lead full time spinner along with Bhajji.

This squad has 3 pacers and then Hardik and Shardul who, for various reasons cannot be expected to bowl all 10 overs in every match they play. Hardik because of fitness, Shardul because he is an all-rounder and couldn't be trusted to bowl more than 4 overs against even Nepal.

That 2011 team also did not have to face any scenario when they had to play all 3 of Ashwin, Chawla and Harbhajan.  We used only 2 of them in any given game if at all.

The seamers were anyway the ones who were delivering. Zak and Munaf particularly. Harbhajan, despite bowling with a dodgy action, could barely pick wickets through the middle. Chawla was completely useless except against the Netherlands.

Part timer Yuvraj stepped up or else wicket-taking would have stopped with Zak and Munaf. Nehra stepped up in the semis. We don't have part timers of Yuvraj quality.  Heck, Axar is bowling worse than that.

Please check averages and, in particular, strike rates of all spinners in that tournament vis-a vis the seamers. Only Yuvraj was picking wickets through the middle consistently.  Among specialist spinners, only Ashwin acquitted himself well in the 2 games he played. Among seamers, only Sreesanth was truly rubbish.   We have much better fast bowlers now.

We need wicket-taking bowlers throughout. We are blessed to have Kuldeep and Jadeja might take wickets on tracks like yesterday. Axar couldn't even do that.

If spinners can only restrict run flow, they should at least be able to hit the ball around a bit at 8.  Jadeja cannot hit at the death and Axar cannot stop leaking runs.

As much as I think Jadeja is severely overrated, his bowling is more threatening than Axar's and he has to be the 2nd spin option. So, he should make the squad.

Otherwise, we have to back pace to win matches for us.
