World Cup winner Gambhir said franchise cricket was one of the reasons why matches these days don’t have too much aggression.

Gambhir’s comments came during the India vs Pakistan game. The southpaw, who was part of the Indian cricket team which won the 2011 Cricket World Cup, blamed franchise cricket as one of the reasons why cricket games these days don’t have too much aggression.

“When you play on the field for your national team, you must leave the friendship outside the boundary ropes. Game face hona zaroori hai. Dosti bahaar rehni chahiye. There has to be an aggression in the eyes of both sets of players. You can be as friendly as you want after those six or seven hours of cricket. Those hours are very important, because you’re not just representing yourself, you’re representing a nation of over a billion,” Gambhir said in the mid-innings show on Star Sports. “These days you see players of rival teams patting each other on the back and exchanging fist bumps during a match. You would never see that a few years ago. Aap friendly match hi khel rahe ho.”

He went on to add that sledging someone during games was fine, as long as players didn’t cross the line.

“(You can) Sledge, but don’t get personal. You have to stay within your limits. Don’t involve someone’s family member or get too personal. Banter is fine. In games against Australia and Pakistan, there used to be banter,” he said.

“Even during friendly conversations with the opponents, we had aggression in our because you are representing your country and trying to win the game for them. " Gambhir told Star Sports.

“You are free to be friends with the opponents after those 6-7 hours… But those 6-7 hours are very important because it isn't just about you or the jersey you are wearing- you are representing 140 crore Indians", the former cricketer added.

Look at the form of the player who can win you the trophy: Gambhir

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir vehemently disagreed with former teammate Mohammad Kaif's suggestion that KL Rahul should be given the number five spot on his comeback to the Indian team, despite Ishan Kishan's heroics against Pakistan

Reminding Kaif about the kind of form Kishan has been in, Gambhir said, "Had Kohli or Rohit made those four consecutive fifties, would you have said the same thing about KL Rahul? When you are preparing to win a World Cup, you don't look at a name, you look at the form of a player that could win you the trophy,"

More than the sledge, it's the fear factor which seems to be missing in the current ICT.

Gambhir, MS, Yuvraj, Sehwag all had that psychological advantage over Pakistan..Gambhir was always a tough nut to crack, MS first bullied Pakistan with scores of 148 & then his inns of 72(46) and 77(56) instilled the fear in Pak bowlers. Sehwag was always brutal against Pak with bat and used to puncture their bowling attack in pp itself. That Assault on Umar Gul in 2011 WC just put their bowlers in the backfoot since start.

Currently, none of the present batters has that fear factor, Kohli had in the past but his severe weakness against left arm swing and spin has opened up enough cracks in his armour.

One terrorizing inns which will smash these Shaheen's and Rauf's will be enough to bring them to knees. Jadeja did that to Waqar in 1996 and after that he always bowled like a scared kitten against India..even in 2003 WC, he was thrashed mercilessly like a third grade bowler all around the park by Sachin and Yuvraj.

On the contrary besharam Gill, Darpok Sharma, *** lolhi made a fool if themselves. All were scared chickens. Kohli MC needs to be kicked out. Sara drama yeh karta hai. I know Siraj can give it back.. I will kick Dravid and Sharma if they try to stop him. Be aggressive chewtiyo. That Gill innings was pathetic... He was scared

To be fair, they are not going to play each other any time soon in a high-stakes international competition.  And not only that, this is not the same as VK yakking it up with the opponent (irrelevant whether those are Pakistanis or Saffies or Pommies ...) after an embarassing loss.

Shoaib malik probably instilled more fear in the indian team than these Guys being mentioned from the 2000s decade ever did.

pakistan had a 22-18 winning record over India in the 2000-2010 decade and shoaib malik etc were thrashing Indian bowlers for fun. Lol @ people quoting players from that time.
Only Kohli and Dhoni to an extent stood up and changed that.
