Gollum
Shubman Gill and Deepti Sharma have won the BCCI awards for best men's and women's international cricketers of 2022-23. Gill won the men's award, named after the former India captain Polly Umrigar, for the first time in his career, while Deepti won the women's award for the second time - she also won it for the 2019-20 season. The BCCI had not announced their awards since naming Jasprit Bumrah and Poonam Yadav the international cricketers of 2018-19. They have now cleared their backlog, announcing winners for the past four seasons in one go. Mohammed Shami and Deepti have taken the honours for 2019-20, R Ashwin and Smriti Mandhana for 2020-21, and Bumrah and Mandhana for 2021-22. Former India allrounder Ravi Shastri, meanwhile, has been bestowed the BCCI's lifetime achievement award. Link to comment
Gollum
Aisa kya teer ukhada Gill ne? I swear never in Indian cricket history has a player been pampered so much. That too despite zero achievements, are we a minnow nation to celebrate rank mediocrity? Majestic 1 Link to comment
MediumPacer
Couldnt fix his weakness in all theses years ,maybe mentally weak as well, not going to be a great player. Didnt want to play aggressively at kkr under baz ,give us an insight into his character. Gollum 1 Link to comment
MediumPacer
i guess they are going by his odi stats?? this is why stats are not a good indication given so many diff conditions that great players need to adjust to. Link to comment

Had a freak IPL season and a 200 in a bi-lateral in between but nothing in important tournaments Link to comment

King of soft runs and massively inflated avg mainly due to minnow bashing and high scores in inconsequential games. These jokers retaining top ranking is a joke. No true cricket fan would take it seriously. Edited January 25 by Frustrated Gollum and tapandrun 2 Link to comment

Number
Top order batting in ODIs is so easy for statpadding these days. More so in bilaterals. Even Babar is a Bradman-level player there and even Imam ul Haq who is noway a whiteball batter has such good stats. Edited January 25 by Number singhvivek141 and Gollum 2 Link to comment
Gollum
23 despite a DRS shocker yesterday, clownish batting against mediocre spin bowling. Yeh kya scam chal raha hai Indian cricket mein? How is this guy the number one pick in our team? Frustrated and express bowling 2 Link to comment

Failed every single time outside that venue. 200 in useless bilateral against NZ C attack. Edited January 26 by Gollum Link to comment

Gill won't make into this Bangladesh XI on merit, see his game against spin? He wouldn't average in double digits on those Bangla pitches. Gill has not achieved anything remotely close to it in Test Cricket. In ODIs both make soft runs.. But Babar at Gill's age used to be better at it. Frustrated and Gollum 2 Link to comment

Some posters here keep saying that Gill is "once in a generation talent". They are actually right. He is indeed "once in a generation" batter who will end up with an avg of less than 25 in Indian test cricket history. Lone Wolf and Gollum 2 Link to comment

Gollum
Gill is too deeply connected with Bollywood, dating nepo kids, Sachin's daughter etc. Also Harbhajan, Yuvraj hype him up like crazy while running down others, strong Punjabi/opposition lobby behind him (remember his support to farmer's protests). Sponsors, IPL lobby, GT......Vikrant Gupta and others do a good cover job for him. Don't think he can be dropped even if he keeps failing. Edited January 26 by Gollum Frustrated 1 Link to comment

When Gill hit that gabba knock 3 yrs ago, he was being touted as the 'next big thing' in indian cricket. Since then, he has had a series of flop shows as an opener (incl. flop shows on home grounds). The general perception among many fans changed to this: "He is more suited in the MO (at 4 or 5)". As of now, he has had a series of failures in every batting position. I can see the narrative (among his fanboys) changing to : "He is more suited for the role of a Nightwatchman" Edited January 26 by Frustrated Gollum 1 Link to comment

cowboysfan
what a dramatic fall it will be for Gill.He has failed to improve on his weakness.when you look so bad at home then you have no place in the test team. Gollum and Frustrated 2 Link to comment
tapandrun
Good that Shastri got the award, man has done everything bcci asked for in the time of crisis. Was the voice of BCCI when BCCI needed a voice. Defended Ind superstars in ball tempering, took the manager's role when they had early exit after the 2007 WC. Promoted IPL. Didnt let issue between Players and Kumble become a fall-out. BCCI again putting all their eggs in one basket in search of a superstar who they can market, It was KL Rhaul and afterwards Pant. Giving them them the longer rope, letting them select their batting positions. Regardless how good/bad they are in certain formats they are getting to play all 3 format.
